Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg - Logo The Faculty of Economics and Management of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) jointly seek qualified candidates to fill a position at the rank of Assistant Professor (W1) in Labor Economics lJEL Classification: C, D, J We are seeking a labor economist with strong empirical research skills and a strong research interest in labor economics. The primary focus of the position is on how AI and new technologies affect workers and firms, particularly their role in driving productivity. We especially welcome candidates who adopt a microeconomic, data-driven approach to studying labor market and innovation outcomes. A solid background in areas such as the reallocation of human capital, skill demand, or the processes of wage and skill formation is particularly desirable. The Assistant Professorship serves to deepen the collaboration between the University and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH). The IWH is one of the seven economic research institutes of the Leibniz Association in Germany (). The IWH focuses on research in structural change and productivity, law and regulation, finance, and macroeconomics. The Assistant Professorship is associated with the Department of Structural Change and Productivity at IWH, which conducts research on labor market dynamics and the effects of technological change on workers and firms. The position also strengthens the labor economics research focus at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (). The requirements are: the completion of an outstanding PhD in Economics or closely related disciplines by fall of 2026 at the latest, the potential for successful publications in leading international journals, and ideally an existing network of international research collaborations. It is expected that the candidate will teach in the Faculty's Bachelors and Masters Programmes. Knowledge of the German language is not a requirement for the position. In legal terms, there will be an individual selection process carried out for the position hereby announced. The position is a fixed-term civil servant contract (Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit) under public law. The initial term is three years, with a three-year extension following a successful interim evaluation.
