Job Description
Assistant Professor in European and or Global History (pre-1800) JOB SYNOPSIS

The School of History and Geography at the University of Limerick (UL) invites applications for the post of Assistant Professor in European and/or Global History (pre-1800). If you are seeking to develop your academic career within a dynamic, collegial and forward looking environment, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity. This role offers significant scope to shape and expand your research trajectory, to contribute to the continued growth of our own research profile, and to play a key role in delivering high quality teaching across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The School of History & Geography is committed to strengthening its position as a leading research community both within Ireland and internationally, while equipping students with the critical skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. Historians at UL form a vibrant, collaborative community of scholars, including nine permanent lecturers, as well as post doctoral fellows and teaching assistants, providing a supportive environment for innovation, mentorship and intellectual exchange. Our fields of expertise span the late medieval period to the twentieth century, incorporating Irish, British, European, American, and Australian dimensions of the discipline. Our scholarship extends across political, social, intellectual, and cultural history, with strengths in urban history, diplomatic and conflict history, oral history, architectural history, Irish republicanism, the history of the family, and the early modern Iberian world. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to and further develop these areas, while also introducing new perspectives and research directions.

The School has a strong track record of securing external funding for both individual and collaborative projects, with awards from the Irish Research Council (including Laureate Awards), the Fulbright Commission, the Royal Irish Academy, and other major funding bodies. The appointee will be supported in pursuing ambitious research agendas and in securing external funding, with opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Limerick Centre for Early Modern Studies (CEMS), an important research hub linked to the school. History at UL is one of the most popular subjects within undergraduate programmes, offering a stimulating teaching environment and opportunities for curriculum development. We also have a thriving postgraduate research community, with several taught Masters programmes and a substantial cohort of Ph.D. researchers, providing further opportunities for supervision and mentorship.

Requirements: Candidates should have a Ph.D. in History, evidence of excellent research at an international level, and clear potential to secure external research funding. The ability to teach modules in early modern Europe and/or the Iberian Atlantic World will be an advantage.
