The Role
The Assistant Maintenance Services Manager (Contracts) supports the operational management of Property and Support Services within a designated area of NHS Lanarkshire. As part of the management team, the post holder provides operational leadership and oversees the delivery of Engineering, Building, and Grounds maintenance services through external contractors and service frameworks.
The role has responsibility for managing delegated backlog maintenance schemes, contributing to the Capital Programme, and ensuring effective contract administration, including specifications, documentation, and on site contractor management. The post holder ensures estates and property assets are maintained in compliance with statutory requirements, NHS Scotland guidance, fire safety legislation, NHS Firecode, and health and safety policies, supporting the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of NHS Lanarkshire's estate.
In this key role, you will:
- Provide day to day operational leadership for the Maintenance Department within a designated area of NHS Lanarkshire, including effective management of staff, contractors, and resources to ensure Engineering, Building, and Grounds maintenance services are delivered safely, efficiently, and to agreed standards.
- Manage delegated backlog maintenance schemes and contribute to the delivery of the Capital Programme, including responsibility for design input, contract specifications, documentation control, and on site management of contractors to ensure works are delivered on time, within budget, and to specification.
- Lead and support Health and Safety procedures within the Estates function, ensure robust business continuity arrangements for critical assets and systems, and work collaboratively with key stakeholders such as Infection Prevention and Control, Finance, Procurement, Site Management, clinicians, and microbiology to support safe and effective healthcare environments.
- The post holder requires to be professionally qualified and hold corporate membership of an appropriate professional body, which normally requires a MSc degree or equivalent in an appropriate Engineering/Building related subject, e.g. Corporate Member of the Chartered Institute of Building Services, demonstrable experience in an operational management post in health care or related commercial environment, plus a qualification in operational management, if not taken as part of the degree, is required to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the post.
- Additionally, specialised certificate training, 3 yearly refresher training and 1 yearly update and CPR training is required for statutory duties (HV and LV Electrical, Legionella, Sterilisers, Lifts, Mains Gas, Ventilation Systems, etc.) the post holder is nominated to undertake and which may require national registration of the nominee.
- The post holder shall be required to demonstrate sound knowledge and understanding of Statutory Standards & the management of Health & Safety.
- Experience of contract management & auditing.
- Experience of contract specification, procurement and evaluation of tenders / proposals.
- A driving licence is required; this must be a full UK/EU/EEA licence.
From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part time working hours will be reduced on a pro rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
