Job Description

Position: Art, DT & Food Technician

Location: Hackney

Start date: September 2026

Smart Teachers is recruiting on behalf of a thriving secondary academy in Hackney for an Art, Design Technology & Food Technician to join the school on a full-time basis from September 2026.

This is a long-term cover opportunity supporting the Art, Design Technology and Food departments. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring practical lessons run smoothly by preparing resources, maintaining equipment and supporting teaching staff and students throughout the school day.

The Role

As an Art, DT & Food Technician, you will:

  • Prepare classrooms, workshops and food rooms with the equipment and resources required for practical lessons.
  • Support teachers and students during practical activities across Art, Design Technology and Food.
  • Organise, prepare and maintain teaching materials and departmental resources.
  • Monitor, replenish and order stock, ensuring departments remain well equipped.
  • Maintain workshops, kitchens, machinery, tools and equipment to ensure they are safe, clean and ready for use.
  • Carry out routine maintenance of hand tools and workshop equipment where appropriate.
  • Maintain high standards of organisation, cleanliness and health and safety across all preparation areas.
  • Assist with displays, exhibitions and departmental administration, including photocopying and laminating resources.
  • Ensure laptops, equipment and specialist resources are stored securely and prepared for the following day.
The Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will:

  • Have previous experience working as a school technician, ideally within Art, Design Technology, Food Technology or Science.
  • Be organised, practical and confident working across multiple departments.
  • Have a good understanding of health and safety procedures within workshops, kitchens or specialist teaching environments.
  • Be proactive with excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Be comfortable maintaining stock levels, preparing resources and supporting practical lessons.
Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must:

  • Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to obtain one.
  • Be able to provide two satisfactory professional references.
  • Have the right to work in the UK.
  • Be available to start from 2nd September 2026.
