Advanced Surgical Practitioner/Trainee Advanced Practitioner

The closing date is 23 October 2025

The post holder will deliver expert clinical care in cardiac and thoracic surgery, supporting consultants and registrars during procedures and managing patient care across outpatient clinics, preadmission assessments, ward rounds, and discharge planning. Operating at an advanced level, they will lead the cardiothoracic specialty service, manage a patient caseload from diagnosis to discharge or end-of-life, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies to ensure high-quality care. A Master's in Surgical Care Practice is required.

Please note if you don't meet the Band 8a persons specification then consideration will be made for a training opportunity for a band 7 to 8a

Main duties of the job

The Advanced Cardiovascular SCP provides autonomous, expert care for cardiac surgery patients, leading clinics, initiating assessments and treatment plans, assisting in theatre, and managing daily inpatient care. The role includes leadership in clinical decision making, urgent care management, MDT participation, and service development to ensure high quality, patient centred care.

Person Specification Knowledge (Band 8a)
  • oExcellent understanding of advanced practice
  • oExcellent knowledge of cardiothoracic anatomy and surgical operations and procedures
  • oExcellent clinical skills
  • oComplex problem solving and assessment skills
  • oKnowledge of the complex strategic issues which influence the area of practice at a local and national level
  • oAdvanced knowledge of audit/research and evidence of application
  • oAdvanced interpersonal and communication skills
Qualifications (Band 8a)
  • oNMC level 1 registration
  • oMSc in Surgical Care Practice
  • oBasic Surgical Skills Course - accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons
  • oTeaching certificate relevant to Mentoring in Nursing
  • oClinic Skills Level 3
  • oNon-Medical Prescribing Qualification - master's degree module
  • oCALS Provider Certificate
  • oRoyal College of Surgeons SCP Exit Exam
Experience
  • oSignificant experience of working within cardiothoracic surgery (Band 8a)
  • oPost registration experience working at a higher level within a speciality area (Band 7 and 8a)
  • oChange management experience (Band 7 and 8a)
Qualifications (Band 7)
  • oNMC level 1 registration
  • oTeaching certificate relevant to Mentoring in Nursing
  • oClinic Skills Level 3 or ability to achieve within an agreed time frame
