Job Description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The Critical Care Department QEUH is in the position to offer staff with relevant clinical experience and qualifications as Advanced Nurse Practitioner, currently operating within an acute adult hospital setting, the opportunity to join the existing Advanced Critical Care Nurse Practitioner team to further develop the service.

Working across role and organisational boundaries the Advanced Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (ACCNP) reviews and plans clinical care for patients utilising expert knowledge and clinical competence to support the planning and implementation of care within the Critical Care setting based at the QEUH.

Responsible for ensuring a high standard of clinical care, in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Health and Safety Legislation.

As a clinical leader, the ACCNP has the freedom and authority to act autonomously in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, including prescribing, of patients with multi-dimensional problems.

A priority of the Critical Care department is to expand the role of the ACCNP to provide an Outreach service by having two ACCNPs on day shift, 7 days/week. The purpose is for critical care team to follow up in the wards post critical care step downs and support ongoing care. The ACCNPs will provide support to the ward staff by providing a source of advice, education and care as required to staff, the patient and family and identify patients that may require follow up from critical care after hospital discharge.

Furthermore, the plan is to involve ACCNPs in the intra/inter hospital transfer of unventilated, stable patients.

Applications from Advanced Nurse Practitioners with relevant clinical experience in the acute adult setting are welcome.

Ideally applicant will have completed training (or similar) in the following at Masters level -

• Advanced patient history taking and clinical examination (this module is run by NHS Lothian and is accredited by Napier University - 40 credits at Masters level)

• Professional Clinical Work-based Learning (NHS Lothian/Napier University - 40 credits at M level)

• Non-medical Prescribing (Napier University - 40 credits at M-level.

Training and support will be available to successful applicants to develop skills required relevant to the ACCNP role.
