The Role

The Wastewater Plant Operations Supervisor reports to the Wastewater Treatment Operations Manager and is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant or multiple plants within a region. The role involves leading a team of operators, managing operational contractors, contributing operational insights, and collaborating across the organization to deliver minor capital programmes and operational interventions.

Responsibilities
  • Manage day to day plant operations ensuring regulatory compliance and customer service standards are met.
  • Lead and coach a team of wastewater operations and maintenance staff, providing direction and developing their skills.
  • Identify and submit maintenance or operational intervention requests to Treatment Planning, supplying necessary information.
  • Capture and review operational data, producing performance reports, and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Organise maintenance and repair of newly commissioned or upgraded assets, including site training and resource planning.
  • Coordinate sludge movement and optimise sludge contracts in partnership with Operational Contract Management.
  • Accurately record and report service risks and audit information using the provided technology systems.
  • Help develop task schedules and standard operating procedures to maximise quality and efficiency.
  • Monitor and report key performance indicators for owned processes.
  • Support adherence to task schedules, SOPs, and close out of work orders.
  • Provide technical oversight of third party contractors, including permits to work and permits to enter.
  • Assist Key Account Managers with issues affecting key accounts and support the Customer Contact Centre with escalated customer queries.
  • Manage wastewater team costs, coordinating budget usage, and overseeing productivity and vehicle utilisation.
  • Oversee specialist works scoping and method statement reviews, and support field teams with complex asset integrity challenges.
  • Collaborate with Asset Planning on investment planning, risk assessments, and intervention generation.
  • Implement Health and Safety policies, including Construction Regulations, risk assessments, PPE use, and safety skill requirements.
  • Identify hazards and assess risks in operational areas; perform other duties as reasonably requested by the line manager.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and promote health and safety commitments across the organisation.
  • Contribute to the Asset Operations Transformation Programme, driving results within the Directorate.
  • Participate in out of hours and escalation standby work and provide emergency cover as required.
  • Support engagement with regulatory and other stakeholders as needed.
Qualifications
  • Relevant third level qualification or accreditation is desirable.
  • At least 3 years of direct relevant experience in a similar role within water treatment or network & maintenance repair services.
  • FETAC Level 5 / QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate or equivalent - Craft in apprenticeship such as Craft of Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting is desirable.
  • Experience building a high performing team and developing people to achieve results through coaching and delegation.
  • Knowledge of water or wastewater treatment and/or maintenance of treatment and network assets is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of risk management principles (ISO 31000) and risk identification for water and wastewater assets.
  • Effective communication skills for engaging with internal stakeholders and frontline employees.
  • Computing skills: ability to create and interpret spreadsheets and databases.
  • Understanding of key network infrastructure (e.g., control valves, pumps) is an advantage.
  • Understanding of trunk main operations, network management, DMA operability is an advantage.
  • Experience with health and safety culture and regulations.
  • Knowledge of current legislation, standards, processes, and procedures relevant to water and wastewater.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Collaboration skills across functions to achieve objectives.
  • Customer focused business experience.
  • Knowledge of managing process compliance.
