Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

The decarbonisation of the Energy System will play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate the impacts of Climate Change. The technical and societal challenges inherent in decarbonisation are set to be enduring challenges of the mid-21st century and ones that will require a whole of society approach, encompassing academia, industry, government, and citizens.

NexSys is an All Island SFI Strategic Partnership Programme focussed upon the transition to a net zero carbon energy system. It is a unique partnership bringing together a multidisciplinary research team, industry, and policy makers to tackle fundamental research questions to be addressed as part of the transition to net Zero. Hosted by UCD Energy Institute, NexSys brings together academics from nine institutions across the Island of Ireland (UCD, TCD, DCU, ESRI, Maynooth University, UCC, NUI Galway, Ulster University and Queen's University Belfast) to work together to meet the unprecedented scale and complexity of the challenges associated with the energy transition.

NexSys research programme includes a strand dedicated to the water-energy nexus. Substantial research, modelling and engagement undertaken in the first 4 years of the programme, producing an evidence base in areas of relevance to the sector. This role will assist in sector engagement, and further research and analysis as required, to support the Water Strand's research to support evidence based decision making and implementation in Ireland. The role holder will report to the Co-Director of the NexSys programme, and will work collaboratively with the Water Strand leadership, academics, and researchers to achieve these goals.

Salary Range: €47,273 - €53,925 Per Annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Eligibility criteria

Mandatory:

• PhD completed in engineering, environmental science or related discipline.
• Expertise in one or more of the following: Water-Energy nexus, Water resilience, climate resilience relating to the water systems or water policy.
• A demonstrated commitment to research and publications.
• An understanding of the operational requirements for a successful research project.
• Evidence of research activity (publications, conference presentations, awards) and future scholarly output (working papers, research proposals, and ability to outline a research project.
• Excellent Communication Skills (Oral, Written, Presentation etc).
• Excellent Organisational and Administrative skills including a proven ability to work to deadlines.
• Candidates must demonstrate an awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion agenda.
