Trust Grade Doctor (SHO level) in Respiratory Medicine

We are looking for an enthusiastic capable doctor to join our fantastic respiratory team at St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, at a Foundation Year 2 (FY2) or Internal Medicine Training year 1 or 2 (IMT1/2) level. It will suit a doctor with at least one year's experience working clinically and previous experience of working in the NHS as a doctor. Respiratory experience is not essential and will be gained during the post.
This role will be based day-to-day on the Respiratory and Acute Medicine wards at St Mary's Hospital. They will have the opportunity to clerk sick patients on the medical take (in normal working hours). There is an opportunity to upskill in many aspects of respiratory medicine including COPD, asthma, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, pleural disease, non-invasive ventilation and more. Main duties of the jobAs part of the respiratory team, the post holder (along with the registrars, other SHOs and FY1s) will be responsible for the ward-based care of 33 patients on Manvers ward, including an 8-bedded acute respiratory unit. They will also periodically work on the Acute Medicine ward, looking after recently admitted patients. The post holder will not be on the on call rota or work outside of normal hours, although they may be able to clerk new admissions in hours.
There will be opportunities in this post to build on the skills and experiences developed earlier in their career and to lead independent ward rounds, independently assess unwell patients, and be supported in the transition to more senior medical roles.
This is an academic respiratory unit and the post holder will be expected to take an active role in education and research. This will involve teaching junior medical staff and medical students, and completing one audit or research project. They will have opportunities to present at the weekly departmental educational meeting.
The post holder will be expected to attend the structured teaching programmes provided by the department and regular SHO teaching (FY2 or IMT1/2 as appropriate).

Job responsibilitiesThe post holder will work as part of a consultant-led team looking after inpatients on the respiratory ward (Manvers). The 33 patients on the respiratory ward (Manvers) are looked after by a minimum of 2 registrar grade and 4 other (SHO/FY1) staff members at all times, divided into two teams led by a separate consultant. There are often more clinical staff on the wards depending on annual leave, study leave and on call commitments. These patients have conditions such as lung cancer, COPD, asthma, respiratory infections (e.g. pneumonia, TB, bronchiectasis), pleural disease (pneumothorax, effusions and empyaemas), respiratory failure, interstitial lung disease and other general medical conditions.
The post holder will participate in daily board and ward rounds, complete jobs from the ward round, and attend weekly radiology meetings. They will be expected to be able to:
Take a history and examine a patient
Identify and synthesise problems
Prescribe safely
Keep an accurate and relevant medical record
Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care
Act in a professional manner at all times
Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems
Teach junior colleagues and medical students

Person Specification Qualifications- 6 formally months employed NHS experience
- On GMC Register with license to practice , 6 formally months
- Are able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
- Competent in basic clinical procedures
- Completed Foundation Year 2 training
- Evidence appropriate to level of appointment (2)
- MRCP (any part completed, please specify if which of Part 1, 2, PACES is completed)
- Experience of respiratory medicine
- Good Quality General Medicine experience in the NHS
- Evidence of Imperial NHS Trust Values
- Ability to manage chronic and acute medical problems
- Aware of own limitations, consults senior colleagues appropriately

Depending on experience£44,170 - £67,610 per annum +LDN Weighting + 1A banding (50%)
