We are seeking an enthusiastic, innovative and friendly Consultant to join our department at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. Applicants should hold FRCS (or equivalent) and be on the General Medical Council's specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedics. A British or European Hand Diploma is desirable.
ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will join our existing team of two Upper Limb Consultants to provide a dedicated Upper Limb service. Most cases will be performed on a day case basis with anaesthetic support using regional blocks. The inpatient workload will arise primarily from general trauma on call, with junior doctor support arranged on a shared basis. The Consultant will also participate in the Trauma Surgeon of the Week rota with an on call commitment of 1:11. During weekends on call, the Orthopaedic Surgeon is expected to undertake the Sunday morning trauma list. Throughout the trauma week all elective duties are cancelled, and compensatory time is granted the following week.
We are a high volume facility performing a large number of operations on knees, hips, spines, hands, shoulders, elbows, feet and ankles. Whenever possible, surgery is conducted in a day surgery setting and in line with the Best Practice Tariff. Our 12 bed Ultra clean orthopaedic ward accommodates the MDT room and a dedicated gym for post operative rehabilitation. A new fracture clinic, satellite clinics in Bishop's Stortford and St Margaret's Hospital in Epping, and robust infection control procedures support our clinical services. Dedicated physiotherapy and OT teams, joint replacement education classes, and specialised hand therapy are integral to patient care.
- Provide a comprehensive and efficient Trauma & Orthopaedic Service.
- Share responsibility with all Consultant colleagues for evidence based standards of care for all inpatients and outpatients.
- Maintain clinical and quality standards set by the Health Care Commission, East of England Health Authority and local Primary Care Trusts.
- Liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners and all other health care agencies.
- Advise, support and train all junior medical staff.
- Participate in the Trauma Consultant of the Week rota on a 1:11 basis, covering weekend trauma lists from 17.00 on Friday to 08.00 on Monday.
- Take part in the weekday on call 1:13 rota (Monday Thursday).
- Encourage and foster the audit process at clinical, managerial and medical levels and contribute to regional audit.
- Participate fully in the management of the Department, liaising closely with the Lead Doctor and Operational Managers.
- Engage in continuing medical education activities in line with the Royal College of Surgeons' guidelines and in consultation with the Medical Director.
- Full GMC registration.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP) or anticipated date provided.
- FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics) or an equivalent qualification.
- Higher degree is desirable.
- Experience in undergraduate teaching.
- British or European Shoulder Diploma.
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to meeting UK CCST in the relevant specialty.
- Experience of advising on efficient running of trauma services.
- Experience of organising and managing out patient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists.
- Experience supervising Foundation doctors and Specialty trainees.
- Experience teaching clinical and operative skills.
- Experience applying research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.
- Fellowship training in Shoulder +/- elbow surgery.
- Clinical training and experience in Orthopaedic trauma.
- Experience in Hand Surgery.
