Job Description
Transfusion Laboratory Manager

We are looking for an experienced Transfusion Laboratory Manager to join our pathology team at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a professional and well established team that is focused on the patients we serve and the hospital services we support.

Our laboratory is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189:2022. In the Transfusion laboratory we have Werfen/Immucor automated equipment and use a Bio-Rad manual solution, via a managed services contract with Beckman Coulter. Our digital systems include Cirdan Ultra LIMS, ICE ordercomms, and Oracle/Cerner EPR. The Transfusion Laboratory processes over 37,000 tests per annum.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the line management of the laboratory and its staff. Manages the rotas to ensure that service needs are met at all times, in order that a high quality and cost-efficient service is provided. They will prioritise the allocation of staff throughout the discipline, and to other disciplines as required.

Ensures effective channels of communication are identified and used throughout the laboratory. Dealing with contentious and highly complex information and using this information to report to the laboratory management team issues that affect or could affect the optimal performance of the department.

To support the Blood Sciences Laboratory Manager and Deputy Blood Sciences Laboratory Manager in evaluating and researching new techniques and equipment, and evaluating which is most suitable. To actively manage the installation and assessment of new equipment and methods prior to routine use.

To advise the Blood Sciences Laboratory Manager and Deputy Blood Sciences Laboratory Manager in the planning and provision of an innovative, cost effective and comprehensive service, including management, implementation and policy development of any agreed changes to the service.

Liaise with service users to solve problems and to satisfy users' service needs, within the budgetary constraints of the department.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • MSc with specific transfusion content or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Specialist knowledge of current technology and current trends
  • Expert in biomedical science discipline with extensive knowledge and experience in routine laboratory, and its relationship to other clinical areas.
  • Current supervisory or management experience
  • Significant serological transfusion investigation experience.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Knowledge of pathology modernisation
Specific skills
  • Evidence of team leadership skills, including ability to motivate a team
  • Evidence of change management skills
  • Ability to think through highly complex situations and prioritise allocation of staff and other resources
