Job Description

Job Purpose

As a Traffic Engineer, you will support the Traffic & Road Safety team in the design, development, and delivery of Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) and other on-street parking schemes across the borough. You will provide technical expertise on traffic management matters, respond to traffic-related enquiries, and contribute to the delivery of safe, effective, and compliant highway and parking solutions.

Key Duties/Accountabilities
  • Design and develop Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) and on-street parking schemes.
  • Assess and respond to traffic and parking-related enquiries from residents, Members, and stakeholders.
  • Support the Senior Engineer in the delivery of traffic engineering and road safety projects.
  • Produce letters, emails, briefing notes, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure decisions, assessments, and recommendations are accurately documented to provide a clear audit trail.
  • Assess requirements for renewing and replacing traffic signs and road markings.
  • Arrange and monitor works through the Council's approved processes.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to orders, invoices, payments, budgets, and project costs.
  • Monitor expenditure and assist with budget forecasting.
  • Prepare consultation drawings and traffic order documentation.
  • Apply Traffic Signs Regulations and associated legislation to designs and recommendations.
  • Liaise with contractors, officers, residents, and elected Members regarding traffic schemes and proposals.
  • Support the progression of projects from design through to implementation.
Essential Experience Required
  • Experience designing Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) and parking management schemes.
  • Experience working within traffic engineering, transport planning, highways, or road safety environments.
  • Experience applying Traffic Signs Regulations and relevant legislation.
  • Experience preparing traffic orders, consultation plans, and technical drawings.
  • Experience managing project records, budgets, invoices, and expenditure.
  • Experience responding to public and stakeholder enquiries.
  • Experience working within a London borough environment is essential.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively within a small team.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or ParkMap is highly desirable.
Essential Qualifications Required
  • Qualification in Civil Engineering, Highway Engineering, Transport Planning, Traffic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of Traffic Signs Regulations and parking legislation.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Access to a vehicle for business use.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office applications.
Additional Information to Note
  • Working hours: 36 hours per week.
  • Hybrid working arrangement available.
  • Homeworking available on agreed days/dates.
  • Generally 2 days remote working and 3 days office/site-based.
  • Candidates must be able to attend the borough and Council offices at short notice and at least 3 days per week.
  • Full UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle are essential to travel around the borough.
  • We work on bi-weekly payment schedule.
