Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Team Lead - Mechanical Engineering within the Naval Engineering department, reporting to the Engineering Manager - Naval. This role requires strong leadership, communication, technical expertise, and planning skills to ensure the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective, and sustainable mechanical engineering solutions.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing the entire lifecycle of our Naval Handling products, including Replenishment at Sea (RAS) Systems and Mission Bay Handling Systems.

Due to security restrictions, the successful candidate will be required to attain UK BPSS and SC Clearance with no caveats.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Lead and manage the mechanical engineering team based in the UK and Europe.
  2. Ensure the team has the appropriate resources, processes, and tools to succeed, proactively addressing deficiencies.
  3. Estimate and deliver mechanical engineering scope for projects, including OEM design, in-service support, R&D, and new sales opportunities.
  4. Manage project budgets, resources, and schedules.
  5. Monitor project performance metrics and implement improvements.
  6. Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to ensure project success.
  7. Build and mentor a high-performing team, fostering professional development.
  8. Promote an innovation culture to keep products at the forefront of naval technology.
  9. Develop mechanical engineering solutions that meet customer needs.
  10. Provide technical guidance to suppliers, internal teams, and customers, including approving factory tests and inspections.
  11. Manage supplier interfaces and offer technical assistance and approval.
  12. Review technical work of colleagues and provide guidance across departments and to external partners.
Qualifications and Experience:
  1. Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (Master's preferred).
  2. Chartered Engineer status preferred.
  3. At least 5 years of engineering leadership experience.
  4. Over 10 years of mechanical engineering experience.
  5. Experience in a highly regulated industry.
  6. Strong project management and leadership skills.
  7. Proven ability to design detailed mechanical components, drawings, and calculations.
  8. Proficiency in mechanical engineering software (2D and 3D) relevant to marine applications.
  9. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  10. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
Location:

Gateshead, UK, with a hybrid working arrangement (3 days in the office).
