Job responsibilities

The Teaching Fellow in Respiratory Medicine is expected to spend 30% of their time committed to undergraduate education. The clinical work is centred on delivering care to the respiratory in patient ward at Freeman Hospital (Ward 29) at IM1-2 level with a focus on general respiratory care of patients transferred from the assessment suite at RVI or admitted from speciality clinics. This includes a wide spectrum of respiratory disease, including patients requiring non invasive ventilation. There are opportunities to learn from patients undergoing more specialised assessments (lung transplant and pulmonary hypertension) on the ward. There is immediate ward support from a trust grade registrar as well as speciality trainees and consultants. We have recently moved to a consultant of the week model which is valued by our trainees. There are opportunities to develop practical skills in managing non invasive ventilation and basic pleural procedures, primarily pleural aspiration / chest drain insertion but also opportunities to gain exposure and early experience in thoracic ultrasound. There may be opportunities to attend speciality clinics (sleep, severe asthma, lung cancer, pleural disease, transplant, pulmonary hypertension, bronchiectasis, COPD) depending on individual interest and involvement in audit / quality improvement projects is actively encouraged. At present the TF in respiratory medicine does not contribute to the on call rota but there are frequent ad hoc locum opportunities where gaps arise. The unit supports the clinical teaching of students across all clinical years of the curriculum, with a focus on Essentials of Clinical Practice (EoCP). Clinical Experience in Long Term Conditions and Elective Surgery (CELTS), Acute and Critical Care (ACC) and Year 5 student Assistantships.
