Post: Teacher of English - Maternity Cover

Salary: Main Scale 1 to Upper Pay Range 3 (£30,000 - £46,525 FTE)

Contract: 1.0 FTE, Temporary (September 2026 - July 2027)

Start Date: 1st September 2026

Sir John Nelthorpe School is a successful 11-19 mixed comprehensive school with a rich heritage and a strong reputation for academic excellence. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed Teacher of English to join our high performing faculty to cover a period of maternity leave.

The Role

The successful candidate will be a passionate linguist and literature enthusiast, capable of delivering engaging and rigorous lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. This role is suitable for experienced teachers (M1 UPR3) looking for a new challenge in a supportive environment. We also welcome applications from Early Career Teachers (ECTs), including those who will qualify in Summer 2026.

Key Responsibilities
  • To plan and deliver high quality English Language and Literature lessons that inspire and challenge all pupils.
  • To contribute to the development of the English curriculum and share best practices within the faculty.
  • To monitor pupil progress effectively, ensuring that all students-regardless of their starting point-reach their full potential.
  • To maintain a purposeful and positive learning environment in line with the school's behaviour and inclusion policies.
The Successful Candidate Will Have
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or be on track to achieve this by September 2026.
  • A degree in English or a closely related subject.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong professional relationships with students and staff.
  • A commitment to the "Fortis et Fidelis" ethos of the school.
