This role is for a Engineering Team Lead to support and strengthen delivery within our Marine Capability portfolio, based on client site in Rochester.

This role provides visible, on-site technical leadership across a multi-disciplinary engineering team spanning Systems, Electronics and Safety disciplines. Operating within an agile sprint-based delivery framework, the successful candidate will ensure structured backlog governance, embedded technical review discipline, and predictable, high-quality delivery within a regulated defence environment. In addition to delivery leadership, this role carries functional responsibility for the development, performance and capability growth of local engineering team members, contributing to the wider Systems Engineering function. Initial full-time on site presence is required to embed governance stability, with a view to hybrid working once delivery maturity is established.

Responsibilities
  • The Engineering Team Lead will :
    • Lead a multi-disciplinary engineering team delivering Systems, Electronics and Safety outputs.
    • Own and enforce structured backlog governance in collaboration with the Project Manager.
    • Chair sprint ceremonies (e.g., DSUM, backlog refinement, sprint planning).
    • Ensure all engineering tasking is formally captured, prioritised and routed through sprint governance.
    • Embed technical review activities within sprint capacity planning.
    • Maintain oversight of technical compliance with contractual, legislative and quality requirements.
    • Identify and mitigate technical, schedule and delivery risks early.
    • Act as the primary on-site technical point of contact for the customer.
    • Support performance management, objective setting and career development of local team members.
    • Identify training needs and contribute to capability and skills matrix development within the functional organisation.
    • Support technical recruitment and candidate assessment where required.
    • Provide feedback to Head of Function and Chief Engineer on capability gaps and future skills demand.
    • Drive continuous improvement in engineering governance, quality and delivery discipline.
    • Contribute to identification of structured work package opportunities within the account.
    • Act as an ambassador for Expleo engineering standards and professional conduct.
Qualifications
  • HND / Degree qualified in Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Chartered Engineer status desirable but not mandatory.
  • Sole UK National
  • Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, UK Security Clearance (SC).
Essential skills
  • Strong Systems Engineering background with multi-disciplinary awareness.
  • Experience leading engineering teams in regulated or defence environments.
  • Demonstrable experience operating within agile or sprint-based delivery models.
  • Proven ability to enforce structured backlog and delivery governance.
  • Experience embedding technical review processes within live project environments.
  • Experience supporting employee performance management and development.
  • Confident stakeholder management and boundary-setting capability.
  • Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Commercial awareness within structured delivery environments.
Desired skills
  • Working familiarity with Safety Engineering principles.
  • Working familiarity with Electronics Development environments.
  • Experience operating within capacity-based or structured delivery models.
  • Experience strengthening governance within established customer accounts.
  • Familiarity with defence quality frameworks and regulated engineering standards.
  • Experience contributing to wider functional capability planning.
Experience
  • Significant experience (typically 8+ years) within engineering delivery environments.
  • Prior experience as Engineer Team Lead, Technical Lead, Engineering Manager, or equivalent senior role.
  • Experience managing multi-stakeholder demand within complex customer organisations.
  • Experience supporting team development and mentoring engineers across disciplines.
  • Evidence of restoring or strengthening structured delivery discipline in live programmes.
  • Experience operating with visible technical authority within customer environments.

  • Hybrid working available once governance stability is achieved; and with customer consent.
  • Regular collaboration events with Expleo's Systems Engineering Hub in Bristol.
  • Occasional travel to other Expleo or client sites may be required.
