The project:

We are seeking a senior sustainability engineering manager to join Mace's growing responsible business team. The successful candidate will provide sustainability guidance focused on engineering in design development for a prominent UK aviation client. Your role will involve developing and implementing sustainable engineering solutions, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and driving initiatives to reduce the client's carbon footprint. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate sustainable solutions into all project phases. Ideal candidates will have experience in sustainable engineering and design, strong leadership skills, and a passion for driving positive environmental impact. You'll be responsible for:

  • Influencing the development of sustainable engineering practices, including defining project outcomes and ensuring their delivery by the project team.
  • Managing a team of sustainability professionals, overseeing technical work, and supporting their development through guidance and mentorship.
  • Being a technical expert and promoting innovation in areas of engineering related to sustainability, such as responsible sourcing, innovative design solutions, and sustainable buildings.
  • Being a proactive generalist, capable of addressing all major sustainability issues with relevant stakeholders.
  • Supporting business development through bid support, innovation, client liaison, upskilling colleagues, and external profile-raising of Mace and its services.
  • Supporting Mace's leadership in climate change and sustainability initiatives.

You'll need to have:

  • Excellent knowledge of engineering and sustainable design principles, including design processes and embodied carbon.
  • Experience and understanding of project delivery processes, including programme, cost, and operational impacts of net-zero carbon strategies and energy reduction initiatives.
  • Management experience of a team of sustainability professionals.
  • A proven track record of guiding design teams to understand and respond to environmental constraints and opportunities, maximizing positive environmental benefits.
  • Expertise in one or more sustainability topics such as waste, water, energy, carbon, responsible sourcing, building design, or biodiversity.
  • The ability to translate technical topics into layperson's language and articulate the value of sustainability.
  • Ability to represent Mace at forums, through presentations to clients, and within working groups.
  • Leadership qualities to champion sustainability and encourage behavioral change across the business.
  • Experience in developing innovation and best practices, with clear communication to the wider business and clients.
  • Skills in analyzing reporting needs and translating EMS practices across different areas.
  • Bid support experience, including strong business acumen.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with clients and stakeholders, including design teams, contractors, sub-contractors, and regulators.

Additional beneficial experience includes:

  • Practical experience in sectors such as infrastructure, rail, highways, aviation, defense, energy, utilities, or nuclear.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement, project management, or implementing environmental management systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Outcome-focused, calm, and professional demeanor.
  • Effective problem-solving and negotiation skills.
  • Strong administrative and IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
