Base Location: Work will be home based. Forbury Reading office will be used as a training base and for occasional office visits. Start date: July 2026 date to be confirmed. Salary: £26,239 pro rated for 10 hours a week. Working pattern: Part time 1 year fixed term contract, shift work, flexible first options available.
We are looking to recruit a meteorology student into a part time role supporting operational meteorologists in SSE's Energy Markets (EM) business. EM undertakes energy trading and balancing activities on behalf of the Group's wholesale energy portfolio.
This role is suitable for a meteorology student about to start their second or third year who wants to develop skills for a future role in operational meteorology. Ideal candidates have a genuine interest in weather systems and renewable energy. You'll learn from experienced meteorologists and understand how weather impacts the energy industry.
Key Accountabilities- Review and analyse weather information, providing commentary as required to different parts of the SSE Group.
- Produce and issue weather hazard maps to the business.
- Update and issue temperature forecasts to the business.
- Update weather and renewable energy forecasts to the business.
- Provide insight into short term weather patterns.
- Support the Forecasting & Trading teams, working closely with senior meteorologists to develop your experience as responsibilities grow.
- Genuine interest and passion for understanding and interpreting weather systems.
- Good communication skills and a collaborative approach.
- Motivated, self starter with the capacity to work independently and as part of a remote team.
- Some experience of analytical tools is desirable but not essential.
