Job Overview
Somerset Council is seeking an experienced Streetworks Inspector to inspect live street works and completed reinstatements across Somerset.
The role will involve ensuring works comply with NRSWA, permit conditions, the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH) and the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice.
The successful candidate will travel across the county, inspect a high number of sites daily, record outcomes using electronic systems and deal directly with statutory undertakers, site teams and members of the public.
The role requires strong geographic knowledge of Somerset, good navigation skills, confidence dealing with live on-site situations, and ideally a Street Works Supervisor qualification.

This role requires experience or strong knowledge of street works, highways inspections, NRSWA, reinstatement standards, permit compliance, temporary traffic management or statutory undertaker works.
You must be confident working largely unsupervised, travelling across Somerset, using handheld devices and systems, and dealing with live street works situations.
Candidates without relevant street works, highways, utilities, reinstatement or inspection experience are unlikely to be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect live street works across Somerset
- Inspect completed reinstatements to ensure compliance
- Check works against NRSWA, permit conditions, SROH and safety codes
- Meet with statutory undertakers to discuss compliance and performance
- Identify defective works and issue instructions for remedial action
- Follow up on remedial works to ensure compliance
- Record inspections using handheld devices
- Use systems such as Confirm and Street Manager
- Capture accurate mapping information and photo evidence
- Check diversion routes and temporary traffic management arrangements
- Ensure signage and alternative routes are compliant
- Carry out post-closure inspections
- Identify damage caused by diverted traffic
- Direct undertakers to remedy identified issues
- Provide site-based advice to coordinators and statutory undertakers
- Support enforcement processes including section 74 overrunning works
- Provide evidence for non-compliance inspections
- Deal professionally with complaints, enquiries and site issues
Essential Experience & Skills
- Experience or knowledge of street works, highways, utilities or reinstatement inspections
- Understanding of NRSWA requirements
- Understanding of SROH reinstatement standards
- Knowledge of street works permit conditions
- Knowledge of temporary traffic management and site safety requirements
- Ability to inspect live works and completed reinstatements
- Ability to identify defective works and request remedial action
- Confident dealing with statutory undertakers and site operatives
- Good geographic knowledge of Somerset
- Strong navigation skills
- Ability to travel across the county and inspect multiple sites daily
- Confident using handheld electronic devices
- Ability to record accurate inspection notes, mapping and photo evidence
- Ability to work largely unsupervised
- Good communication and public-facing skills
- Full driving licence
- Car insurance suitable for work use

Additional Information
Interviews will be held onsite at County Hall, Taunton.
The interview will be an informal discussion to gauge candidate interest and give candidates the opportunity to ask questions about the role. It is expected to last around 45 minutes.
The role may progress into a full-time role for the right candidate.
