GSL Education seeks enthusiastic and proactive individuals with a background in sports, coaching, fitness, or mentoring to support primary schools across Barnsley. These are school based support roles where you will work closely with younger pupils throughout the school day, helping them stay engaged, confident and focused within the classroom environment.
This is an excellent opportunity for candidates looking to bring transferable skills from sport and coaching into education. Skills such as teamwork, communication, behaviour management and motivation are highly valued, but the role itself is centred around classroom support, learning support and pupil development rather than sports delivery.
About the RoleAs a Sports Coach / Learning Support (Primary), you will support pupils across EYFS, KS1 and KS2, helping to create a positive and encouraging learning environment. You will work alongside class teachers to support learning activities, promote positive behaviour and help children build confidence socially and academically. You may also provide targeted support for pupils who require additional guidance throughout the school day.
Key Responsibilities- Support teachers with classroom tasks and daily learning activities
- Work with individual pupils and small groups to encourage engagement and participation
- Promote positive behaviour and help maintain a calm classroom environment
- Use coaching and mentoring skills to motivate and encourage younger learners
- Support pupils with additional learning or behavioural needs where required
- Help pupils develop confidence, teamwork and social skills
- Provide feedback to teaching staff on pupil progress and engagement
- Background in sports coaching, fitness, mentoring, youth work or similar roles
- Confidence working with children in a primary school setting
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Positive, patient and adaptable approach
- Ability to build supportive relationships with pupils and staff
- Genuine interest in supporting children's learning and development
