Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine (Specialty Emergency Medicine Doctor)

Job Title: Specialty Emergency Medicine Doctor
Start Date: August 2026
Contract Type: Permanent

This post is appointed on a fixed term basis for 12 months for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. The postholder will contribute to service delivery while gaining experience aligned with the specialty training curriculum.

Main duties
  • Assessment and management of emergency patients, including referral to appropriate inpatient specialties.
Job responsibilities
  • Provide timely and effective emergency care within the Emergency Department.
  • Collaborate with Emergency Medicine trainees and multidisciplinary teams to deliver patient care.
  • Engage in supervised clinical practice and participate in quality improvement activities.
Person Specification Qualifications, Training & Experience
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Primary medical qualification recognised by the GMC
  • GMC registration
  • Current ALS certificate
  • Minimum of 4 years post registration experience, including at least 24 months in Emergency Medicine, with at least 12 months in an NHS ED environment
  • MRCEM
  • Current ATLS or ETC certificate
  • Additional experience in acute specialities
  • Experience of teaching
  • Experience in Quality Improvement

  • Ability to initiate management of acutely ill patients and anticipate developing situations
  • Thoroughness and punctuality, demonstrating discipline and meeting deadlines

  • Logical and analytical thinking for problem solving and decision making
  • Teamwork as part of a multi disciplinary team
  • Evidence of clinical performance through workplace assessments (DOPs, Mini CEX, CBD, ACAT) and multi source feedback
  • Evidence of academic and research achievements (publications, presentations, etc.)
  • Involvement in audit, quality improvement, research projects or similar activities
  • Leadership, organisational, and motivational skills benefiting patient care through quality initiatives
  • Commitment to continuing medical education
