Job Description

This is a substantive post open to anaesthetists with at least four years' experience in anaesthesia. The successful applicant would be expected to be able to deliver elective anaesthesia under local supervision. Emergency duties include the provision of anaesthesia for surgical operating theatre suite, labour ward (obstetric anaesthesia/analgesia) and critical care (intensive care medicine).

Main duties of the job

Delivery of a first class anaesthetic service for elective and emergency cases in all surgical specialties.

Resident on-call duties covering emergency surgery, obstetric anaesthesia services or intensive care cover.

Intra and inter hospital critical care transfers

Engage with clinical governance and attend regular departmental quality improvement meetings.

Job responsibilities

The on call rota operates over an eight week cycle, in conjunction with (but contractually separate to) the three specialty trainees from the Birmingham School of Anaesthesia. The Job Plan describes a fixed amount of work within each cycle, and this work is therefore still provided irrespective of A/L and Bank Holidays taken i.e. prospective cover built into the job plan is 13.5 Programmed Activities.

Duties and responsibilities

  • The appointee will be expected to provide a first class anaesthetic service for elective and emergency cases in all surgical specialties. Clinical anaesthetic duties will be undertaken mainly in the theatre suite but may also include Obstetrics and Intensive Care.
  • The appointee will be expected to take a role in the Trust Resuscitation Team, which includes immediate life support on the wards and in the Emergency Department.
  • The appointee will be part of the intra- and inter-hospital transfer service.
  • The appointee will be expected to undertake a programme of audit or other forms of clinical governance under a designated consultant supervisor.
  • The appointee will take part in regular Departmental, Academic and Audit meetings.
  • The post-holder would be expected to participate in Continuing Medical Education to the level required by the Royal College of Anaesthetists / IBTICM as appropriate to the individual post-holders.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • MBBS or Equivalent
  • Completed 4 years full time post graduate training (or equivalent if part time) at least 2 of which shall be in specialty training programme in the speciality or; Shall have equivalent experience and competencies
  • Full GMC Registration
Experience & Knowledge
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
Teaching Experience
  • Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
Research/Audit Experience
  • Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
  • Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research
Communication Skills
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, other specialties and support staff
  • Evidence of management experience or training.
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to manage and lead department
