Specialty Doctor in Adult Cardiac Surgery

The closing date is 05 March 2026

Full Time - 10 sessions per week and some additional sessions for On Call. Fixed Term - 6 months. Applications are invited for a position of Specialty Doctor in Cardiac Surgery, starting February 2026. The post will be for an initial period of six months with opportunities for extension and will be based at St. Thomas Hospital. Applications are also welcome from those in possession of Certificate of Completion of Training in Cardiothoracic Surgery in the UK or overseas and who wish to obtain further experience in complex mitral or complex aortic vascular surgery.

Main duties of the job

To provide clinical services for cardiac surgery patients in support of the consultant surgeons. Duties will include training and mentoring of less experienced colleagues and other staff, participation in clinical audit and in clinical research projects. Clinical areas covered will mainly include theatres, wards, overnight intensive recovery unit and outpatients. To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.

To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Job responsibilities
  • Provide Cardiac Surgery services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust
  • Diagnosis and treatment of patients in the trust's hospitals, health centres or clinics, or other premises as required.
  • Continuing clinical responsibility for patients in your charge, allowing for delegation and training of staff.
  • Take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to the post-holder, as agreed with the supervising consultant.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities, including audit, guideline and protocol development and risk management.
  • Produce evidence of contribution in these areas and audit of own clinical work as part of appraisal.

There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co operate with those monitoring arrangements.

All posts and working patterns are under constant review in line with both New Deal and European Working Time Directive (EWTD) guidelines.

Neither the London Deanery nor the Royal College of Surgeons accredits this post for postgraduate training. However, the post-holder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities such as departmental meetings, x ray meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, research clubs, etc.

All post holders will be designated a professional development mentor from among the consultant surgeons with whom a professional development contract will be agreed and reviewed on a regular basis.

All medical and dental staff are required to undertake appraisal.

Person Specification Professional Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practise
  • MRCS or equivalent, higher degree
  • FRCS or equivalent
Clinical Experience
  • Equivalent to four years full time clinical experience in cardiothoracic surgery including pre and post operative care
  • Experience leading ward rounds
  • Experience as first assistant in cardiac surgery including setting up cases
  • Independent management of outpatient clinics with consultant oversight
  • Sub speciality courses
  • Experience as primary operator under supervision
Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Competent IT user
  • Attendance to courses and seminars
Research
  • Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
  • Experience of clinical research
  • Current GCP certification
