Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Training Officer

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Wye Valley NHS Trust (WVT) for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist Training Officer to join our Blood Sciences Department. We are looking for a keen, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with an interest in developing staff and services to help us continue to deliver exceptional, high-quality integrated care to our patients.
WVT is an excellent place to train and develop new skills and further study will be supported. Therefore, this post will be open to individuals who don't yet have the IBMS Specialist portfolio providing they are committed to completing the portfolio with the support of the department.
The Blood Sciences Department is committed to providing training opportunities to help staff to develop the skills and knowledge they require to excel in their career as a Biomedical Scientist. Opportunities include:
- BBTS Specialist Certification in Transfusion Science Practice
- IBMS Certificates of Expert Practice
- Barbara Bain Morphology update for Biomedical Scientists
- Range of NEQAS meetings and courses
- In house quality training including auditing and incident management
- IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma
- Variety of webinars in all areas of Biomedical Science
The post holder will be responsible for performing a range of scientific procedures on biological samples that contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases and to develop and maintain competency in all sections of the Blood Sciences Laboratory as required: Anticoagulation, Blood Transfusion, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology and Immunology. They will be expected to fully participate in the operation of the department including participation in the extended core hours and 24/7 shift system once competent.
They will assist the Blood Sciences Management Team to help assure appropriate cover to maintain department standards and turnaround times. This role also assists senior staff in the delivery of a comprehensive training and competency programme which will include monitoring of participation and performance and reporting to the Departmental Operations Team.

Person Specification Education & Qualifications- Degree or equivalent, accredited by the IBMS for the purpose of HCPC registration
- HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist
- Evidence of current Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity
- To have proven expert knowledge in the discipline by having the post graduate qualification IBMS Specialist Portfolio in the relevant discipline
- To have or be working towards IBMS certificate of Expert Practice in Training
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to a wide range of people
- Excellent time management and organisational skills
- Good scientific and technical skills
- Good level of computer literacy
- Previous evidence of team working to deadlines
- HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with experience of working in an accredited laboratory
- Experience working in Blood Sciences
- Evidence of participation in staff supervision, mentoring and training
- Familiarity with APEX Laboratory Information Management System
- Experience of cross disciplinary working practices
