Job Description

Part time - 18.75 hours per week

The service will provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health support, education and outreach to residents of all ages living in Bexley.

We are looking for a part-time Outreach Officer, working 18.75 hours per week. Days/hours to be discussed. Evening work will be required in line with community need as well as occasional weekends.

Sexual Health Outreach will include:

Outreach work with target groups including young people, the LGBTQ+ community, those with special educational needs and disability (SEND) and residents who identify as black and minority ethnic (BME) across the borough

Building partnerships with outlets and distributing condoms for our condom distribution schemes

Delivering training to partners to become registration points and condom distribution outlets

Delivery of relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) to young people in community settings and schools

Working with identified at risk groups in the community to offer advice and guidance

Opportunistically offering chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests to under 25s, with a focus on young women, including encouragement to register to the C-Card condom distribution scheme

Promotion of online STI/HIV self-sampling kits with support to access

Signposting and assisted signposting to sexual health services -

Main duties of the job

Provide regular outreach sessions both in person and online, focusing on increasing education, knowledge and skills to facilitate behaviour change

Promote outreach sessions to residents and partners through a variety of channels

Engage with marginalised groups (MSM, Black Africans, SEND, young people) to increase awareness and knowledge of sexual and reproductive health support

Lead on the provision of targeted groups for young LGBTQ+ people

Recruit and maintain a range of quality assured outlets for registration and distribution of C-Cards and condoms

Ensure staff are trained and have the skills to distribute condoms and communicate effectively, sensitively, and inclusively with young people around condom use, safer sex and signposting to sexual and reproductive health services

Offer chlamydia tests to young people in outreach and other settings with a focus on young women

Promote and offer chlamydia screening to those who are classed as vulnerable or high risk, such as those aged under 16 and/or those facing digital exclusion

Provide training to partner organisations and other professionals on sexual and reproductive health

Person Specification Qualifications and training
  • Educated to a minimum of GCSE level qualification
  • Some sexual health training or relevant experience (previous delivery of sessions with young people in schools or the community, ACET, Sex Education Forum or previous FPA training)
  • PSHE delivery trained
  • Train the Trainer qualification
Specific skills
  • Ability to engage with and motivate others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to present sensitive and occasionally contentious subjects with clarity, empathy and compassion
  • Sound understanding of responsibilities and scope of role, including escalation and referral
  • Ability to manage barriers to understanding and acceptance for a diverse audience
  • UK driving license with ability to drive with access to a vehicle or access to local transport systems for travel across Bexley borough.
  • Worked as part of a public health provider team
Experience
  • Experience of supporting and/or delivering sexual and reproductive health interventions
  • Experience/knowledge of recognising and following up on safeguarding concerns
  • Experience of delivering outreach from a variety of settings
  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Available for evening outreach and occasional weekend activity
  • Experience of working with the LGBTQ+ community/BME community/SEND
Information Technology
  • Proficient with mobile/remote working e.g. laptop, tablet, smartphone
