Job Description

Our client is recruiting for a Service Charge Accountant to join their business in Birmingham. The role is remote with occasional office travel, and is paying between £40-45k.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the rent and service charge cycle across a large portfolio of properties, acting as the subject matter expert and central point of coordination.
  • Work closely with Housing, Finance and operational teams to ensure clear communication and accountability throughout the service charge process.
  • Manage annual service charge budgets, preparing reconciliations, accruals and year-end accounts with precision and attention to detail.
  • Ensure accurate charging, billing and reporting by establishing robust processes, controls and approvals that promote transparency.
  • Improve cost coding, data quality and audit trails to strengthen governance and facilitate effective audits.
  • Support audits, reviews and year-end assurance activities by delivering information that stakeholders trust for its accuracy and strong evidence base.
  • Drive continuous process improvements that enhance structure, ownership and repeatability within the rent and service charge function.
  • Build strong relationships with internal teams to foster collaboration and ensure successful outcomes.

What you bring:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of service charges within property finance or housing finance environments is essential for success in this role.
  • Strong background in budgeting processes, reconciliations and cost recoverability ensures accurate financial management across portfolios.
  • Experience collaborating with operational teams as well as finance professionals and auditors supports effective cross-functional communication.
  • Advanced Excel skills combined with data analysis capabilities enable you to produce detailed reports that inform decision-making.
  • Accounting qualification (part-qualified or qualified by experience such as AAT) provides a solid foundation for handling complex financial tasks.
  • Familiarity with property management principles enhances your ability to interpret agreements accurately.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills allow you to build dependable relationships across departments while promoting collaborative problem-solving.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement drives your approach towards strengthening governance structures within the rent/service charge function.
