We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team, in this busy, friendly department.

Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust provides countywide Haematology and Transfusion services across two major sites at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. We have a 24/7 service with specialisms rationalised across sites.

We are one of the largest hospital trusts in the country providing high quality acute elective and specialist care for a population of more than 850,000 people. This incorporates specialist services, including haematological malignancies, for neighbouring counties and we have facilities for autologous stem cell transplantation. We support Clinical Immunology with an Immunology Laboratory within the management structure of Haematology. Overall, the department processes approximately 78,000 requests and 1.5 million tests per annum.

This exciting opportunity is for a Senior Specialist in Haematology with particular responsibility for Special Haematology. The areas of responsibility include morphology, special staining and haematological malignancies.

Participation in a 24/7 shift system including nights, lates, early and core sessions. This also includes a backup system to offer advice and cover sessions at short notice due to sickness.

Main duties of the job

The Senior Specialist in Haematology has a pivotal role in ensuring the service to clinicians and patients is of the highest quality and provided in an environment that is safe for staff and visitors. Their expert knowledge on the application of Haematology theory and methods drives continual quality improvement within the department. Specific responsibility for the areas of Special Haematology including morphology, special staining and the local element of the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be registered with the HCPC and have completed an MSc in Haematology. With extensive post registration experience within an NHS Haematology Laboratory and have relevant experience in the specialist areas of morphology, special staining and Haematological malignancies. Acting as a role model and mentor to more junior members of the team. Running regular educational sessions for staff on interesting cases to develop the team. Supporting the training of morphology for more junior BMS staff and marking of Specialist Portfolio work in the areas of special haematology.

  • Registered with the HCPC
  • Accredited Honours Degree in Biomedical Science
  • MSc in Haematology

Knowledge & Skills
  • Acts as a role model and are able to lead by example to ensure the Trust's values and behaviours are reinforced throughout their area of practice.
  • Able to supervise non-registered and less experienced staff to ensure effective service and care delivery.
  • Able to effectively and appropriately escalates concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety
  • Able to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to area of practice
Experience
  • Extensive post registration experience in an NHS Haematology or Blood Sciences Laboratory
  • Evidence of working in a busy NHS Pathology Department
