Job Description
Overview

Senior Space Manager - Leader of space planning, performance improvement, and strategic delivery across Durham University's estate portfolio. Full time, 35 hour week with hybrid working (minimum three days onsite).

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategic space management plans, policies and performance programmes, driving continuous improvement and cost efficiency.
  • Lead the University Space Management Group, coordinating senior staff across Faculties and Services to embed best practice and data driven decision making.
  • Analyse complex data sets, benchmark against peer institutions, and produce evidence based recommendations to inform strategic planning and capital investment.
  • Represent the university at internal and external governance meetings, influencing policy and service delivery.
  • Manage major infrastructure projects, collaborating with multi agency partners and ensuring compliance with health, safety and regulatory standards.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators, statistical information and reporting for space utilisation and operational cost reduction.
  • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion, embedding EDI values into all aspects of space management and team leadership.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree level or substantial experience in resource scheduling, estates or large complex organisations.
  • Proven practitioner of specialist space management, with strategic influence and service delivery expertise.
  • Strong analytical skills: data interpretation, modelling, and evidence based recommendations.
  • Experience of leading and developing specialist estates services and major infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Digital competence across Microsoft 365, business systems and data analytics tools.
  • Professional knowledge and compliance with regulatory and organisational policy and guidelines.
  • Track record of managing and developing large service teams, being customer focussed and working in a complex environment.

  • Project management qualification.
  • Continued professional development and enhanced management qualification.
  • Experience in the higher education sector or working knowledge of university structures.
