A central government department is seeking a Senior Software Developer to join a high-profile programme focused on transforming how public sector data is accessed and reused. You'll play a key role in redesigning data.gov.uk into a modern, reliable data hub, building open data services and APIs that support transparency and innovation across government. This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical expertise, collaboration in multi-disciplinary teams, and a passion for creating well-documented, maintainable code.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable open data services and APIs.
• Lead on software architecture and coding standards aligned with GDS principles.
• Collaborate with UCD specialists, product managers, and other engineers.
• Ensure delivery meets Service Standard and Technology Code of Practice.
• Contribute to agile ceremonies and support continuous improvement.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Proven experience in Python (Ruby is a bonus).
• Strong knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, Git, version control.
• Experience with APIs, open data platforms, and agile delivery.
• Ability to produce robust, well-documented code and take ownership of the development process.
• Comfortable working in small, collaborative teams.
• Government experience is beneficial but not essential
