Senior Project Manager
Location: Cardiff
An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Project Manager to join the team at Galliford Try. Ideally, you will be based in or around the Cardiff area and will have the opportunity to travel across multiple sites/projects in the region.
What you will be doing- To ensure that the site is organised and that it is always in good order.
- To understand your position within the construction team and what is expected.
- To assist and lead on occasions with the various disciplines within the construction processes.
- To communicate within the construction team and potentially direct junior members of the team.
- Take direction and instruction from line managers and challenge if necessary.
- To direct the necessary labour, plant, staff and equipment to achieve plot and project completion on time, to specification and within budget.
- Train and develop junior members of the team to meet current and assessed future requirements.
- Monitor that the Buying team and Surveying department order the correct materials and sub-contract services in good time to meet contract objectives.
- Ensure compliance with Group Safety Policy and Health and Safety Regulations.
- Ensure that staff and operatives are managed and led effectively by developing the skills and attitudes of managers leading to a working environment that engenders high morale.
- Manage site teams by monitoring performance against contract targets and instigating any necessary corrective actions.
- Establish that staff training and development has occurred as planned at annual appraisal and appraisal review stages.
- Achieve maximum marks on the twice-monthly Health and Safety audit.
- Lead the end-to-end delivery of projects within prison and secure estate environments.
- Develop and manage project plans, programmes, budgets, and risk registers.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and external suppliers.
- Build strong relationships with prison governors, custodial staff, government representatives, and client stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with security protocols, health and safety legislation, and regulatory requirements.
- Manage project governance, reporting, and performance against key milestones.
- Identify and mitigate project risks while maintaining operational continuity.
- Monitor budgets, control costs, and manage change effectively.
- Ensure projects meet quality standards and client expectations.
- Support business development by identifying opportunities for service improvement and future work.
- Proven experience as a Senior Project Manager delivering complex projects.
- Previous experience working within prisons, custodial environments, or the secure estate (essential).
- Strong knowledge of project management methodologies.
- Experience managing project budgets, programmes, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance.
- Strong problem solving, negotiation, and decision making abilities.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel where required.
- Experience delivering construction, refurbishment, FM, M&E, or infrastructure projects within custodial settings.
- Knowledge of public sector procurement and government frameworks.
- Relevant professional membership (APM, PMI, CIOB, or equivalent).
Applicants must have significant experience of working on design and build projects, for a main contractor, as well as in the management of H&S, and the design and procurement processes.
Applicants must have experience managing all aspects of the build process; coordinate the packages from the design and procurement phase through to installation on site and handover. We welcome interest from applicants with experience working on Education and/or MOJ Projects.
