Job Description
Overview

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust offers the role of Senior Neonatal Homecare Nurse (Band 6) within Neonatal Home care Service, hosted by Leicester hospitals. The closing date is 04 October 2025.

Neonatal Community Care is provided across Leicestershire and Rutland and the Northamptonshire region, including University Hospitals of Leicester, Kettering and Northampton Hospitals. The post is primarily based in Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland. The post holder will be an excellent team worker and will ensure the highest standard of clinical care for infants within the scope of neonatal outreach, providing specialist ongoing care for the neonate and advice, support and education to the family in the home. Home naso-gastric tube feeding and Home oxygen service are established, with expansion to include care of babies at home on phototherapy for jaundice.

The successful candidate will be registered nurse/midwife with post-specialist neonatal qualification (QIS) and current Health Visitor or Paediatric Community Care experience would be considered.

Main duties of the job

Detailed job description and main responsibilities are as follows:

  • The job holder will assist Neonatal Unit and transitional care staff with early and appropriate discharge planning in accordance with the criteria for outreach care; provide a seamless, timely discharge from hospital to the home environment.
  • Carry continuing responsibility for a defined caseload, including assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of complex care programmes, ensuring continuous provision of integrated care.
  • Provide ongoing holistic care for the neonate and education, advice and support to the family in the home environment.
  • Take a proactive role in the education and training of the multidisciplinary teams, providing ongoing supervision and support as an expert; work effectively as an Outreach team member or independently in planning, assessment, implementation and evaluation of neonatal community care.
  • Plan, time manage and initiate a weekly schedule based on workload requirements to meet service needs and individual family needs; be confident and competent as a lone worker within the Outreach setting (trust policy).

  • Provide ongoing holistic care within the community setting for vulnerable neonates and their families.
  • Support education and training of the multidisciplinary team, provide supervision and act as a resource for disciplines where neonates require ongoing care in neonatal outreach.
  • Work effectively as an Outreach team member and as a lone worker when required, planning and coordinating weekly schedules to meet service and family needs.

Training & Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (Level 1) RGN/RSCN.
  • Post-registration qualification in speciality (ENB405 / QIS).
  • Recognised Teaching and Assessors qualification; willing to undergo related training.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
  • Advanced Neonatal Life Support.
  • Community care of the neonate qualification.
Experience
  • Significant experience in the stated specialist area.
  • Knowledge of neonatal outreach service management and discharge planning; understanding of current issues in neonatal healthcare and community care.
  • Experience of service development and/or change management.
Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; ability to discuss, advise and negotiate care with medical teams.
  • Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently, with good initiative and ability to re-prioritise.
  • Planning and organisational skills to coordinate own and others' workload.
