Job Description
Senior Data Engineer | Permanent | Hybrid | Manchester (£63k)
This is a genuine senior level role requiring proven experience operating at this level, it's not suitable for a first step into seniority.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to take a leading role in shaping and delivering the future of data engineering within a large, complex organisation.

This is a newly created opportunity within our clients Data Analytics, Insight & Reporting team and offers the chance to make a genuine impact. You'll be responsible for helping shape an enterprise level data platform that can support growing data requirements, trusted operational reporting, advanced analytics and future AI capability. This will be central to developing a modern, scalable and sustainable data platform.

It's not just about building pipelines. We're looking for someone who can shape the strategy, influence the direction and bring people with them.

The role:

You'll lead data engineering activity, working closely with data, technology and business stakeholders to develop scalable solutions that support analytics and reporting priorities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the design and development of a modern, enterprise level data platform.
  • Designing, building and maintaining robust data pipelines and integrations across multiple systems.
  • Developing scalable, secure and high-performing cloud-based data solutions.
  • Leading data modelling and database design to support analytics and reporting.
  • Using SQL and Python to develop efficient and maintainable data solutions.
  • Working with technologies including Azure and Databricks, with opportunities to consider Microsoft Fabric and other modern data platform capabilities.
  • Establishing data engineering standards, best practice, documentation and maintainability.
  • Building data quality, governance, security and access controls into the platform.
  • Helping create the foundations required for advanced analytics and AI.
  • Working closely with Technology colleagues to ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture, governance and security standards.
  • Representing DAIR in relevant meetings and data governance forums.
  • Managing and developing an Analytics Engineer within the team.
  • Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and keeping pace with emerging data technologies.
To apply you should have the following skills and experience:

  • An experienced Senior, Lead or Principal Data Engineer/Lead Data Platform Engineer or Data Architect
  • Have a track record of delivering significant data engineering initiatives.
  • Designed and implemented large scale cloud based data platforms.
  • Ideally experience with Azure and Databricks or similar modern data technologies.
  • Strong SQL and Python skills.
  • Significant experience in data modelling and database design.
  • Experience integrating data across multiple systems and platforms.
  • A good understanding of data architecture, governance, security and access control.
  • Experience building data platforms that support analytics, reporting and/or AI.
  • Ideally, experience with Alteryx, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI or similar technologies.
Added to the above you should have demonstrable experience of:

  • Ability to operate at a strategic level and influence how the organisation approaches data.

Be comfortable:

  • Building strong relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Influencing and negotiating with senior colleagues.
  • Challenging existing thinking and constructively questioning technical and strategic decisions.
  • Explaining complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Developing and defending a data platform strategy.
  • Balancing long-term strategic objectives with immediate delivery requirements.
  • Working collaboratively across Technology, Data and the wider organisation.
  • Taking ownership and accountability for delivering high-quality outcomes.
  • Mentoring and developing others.
We're looking for someone with the gravitas to lead the conversation around data, not simply respond to technical requirements.

You'll be joining at an exciting point in the organisation's new data journey, with the opportunity to help define what the future data platform looks like, rather than simply maintaining an existing environment.

You'll have the autonomy to bring ideas, challenge thinking and work with experts across Technology and Data to create a platform capable of supporting future analytics and AI ambitions.

Interview: One 1.5 hour face to face interview 14th October or 16th October to decision.

If you're a Senior/Lead Data Engineer, Data Platform specialist or Data Architect who has actually led the delivery of a significant data platform or data engineering transformation, we'd like to hear from you.
