Job Description
This post provides an exciting opportunity to work intoCardiology and Critical Care and Neonates across Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust.We are looking for a senior Clinical Psychologist who is caring, enthusiasticand dedicated to delivering preventative psychological support and earlyintervention. The successful candidate will be part of a large MDT (includingnursing, medical and surgical colleagues, allied health professionals andoutreach), to offer timely, flexible and early psychological support to familieswithin these two departments. Knowledge and skill using models such asCFT, Trauma-Informed models of care and CBT would be beneficial in this role.An understanding and/or experience of Perinatal Mental Health difficulties andPaediatric and Clinical Health Psychology domains will also be required forthis role.
The Department is academically ambitious with links to theexpanding DClinPsych Programme and Schools of Medicine and Psychology at theUniversity of Leeds, Sheffield and Hull. Additionally, we have a strong trackrecord of providing excellent CPD opportunities and clinical supervision in awide range of therapy modalities.
Neonatology The role involves working within a level 4neonatal unit (including neonatal intensive care, high dependency, special babycare and transitional care) across two neonatal wards at Leeds GeneralInfirmary and St Jamess University Hospital, supporting parents and carers ofvulnerable babies from across the region.
Main duties of the job This role involves delivering highly specialistpsychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based intervention forpatients and their families across a range of clinical settings withincongenital cardiology and neonates, while exercising autonomous professionalresponsibility for care planning, treatment and discharge. It includesproviding expert consultation, guidance and risk management advice tomultidisciplinary colleagues, contributing to psychologically informed careframeworks, and communicating complex, sensitive information clearly. The postalso requires active involvement in teaching, training and supervision oftrainees and MDT staff, as well as contributing to service development throughpolicy input, operational planning, research leadership, service evaluation andaudit. The psychologist is expected to support the development of theworkforce, manage junior staff workloads, participate in recruitment processes,and use theory and evidence-based practice to enhance clinical work and serviceprovision.

Job responsibilities Clinical:
1. To provide specialist psychologicalassessments of patients based upon the appropriate use, interpretation andintegration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychologicaland neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct andindirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews withpatients, family members and others involved in the patients care.
2. To formulate, develop and implementplans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a patientspsychological problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of thepatients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy,across the full range of care settings.
3. To be responsible for implementing arange of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families andgroups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis,adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon differentexplanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
4. To evaluate and make decisions abouttreatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic modelsand highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processesthat have shaped the individual, family or group.
5. To exercise autonomous professionalresponsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of patients whoseproblems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.
6. To provide specialist psychologicaladvice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributingdirectly to patients formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
7. To contribute directly and indirectlyto a psychologically-based framework of understanding and care to the benefitof patients under the medical services, across settings and agencies servingthe patient group.
8. To undertake risk assessment and riskmanagement for individual patients and to provide advice to other professionson psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management, withparticular reference to deliberate self-harm.
9. To act as care co-ordinator, whereappropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of careplans under enhanced CPA (or its equivalent in the acute physical health caresetting) including patients, their carers referring agents and othersinvolved in the network of care.
10. To communicate in a skilled andsensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation andtreatment plans of patients under their care and to monitor progress duringthe course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary care.
Teaching,training, and supervision
1. To receive regular clinicalprofessional supervision from a more senior clinical psychologist and, whereappropriate, other senior professional colleagues .
2. To gain additional highly specialistexperience and skills relevant to clinical psychology and the service (asagreed with the Head of Paediatric Psychology Services) up to two sessionsper week (pro rata).
3. To develop skills in the area ofprofessional post-graduate teaching, training and supervision and to providesupervision to other MDT staffs psychological work as appropriate.
4. To provide professional and clinicalsupervision of doctoral trainee and graduate/assistant psychologists.
5. To contribute to the pre- andpost-qualification teaching of clinical, health and/or counsellingpsychology, as appropriate.
6. To provide advice, consultation andtraining to staff working with the patient group across a range of agenciesand settings, where appropriate.
Management,recruitment, policy and service development
1. To contribute to the development,evaluation and monitoring of the team, specialty and department operationalpolicies and services, through the deployment of professional skills inresearch, service evaluation and audit.
2. To advise both clinical services andthe Head of Paediatric Psychology Services on those aspects of the servicewhere psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.
3. To manage the workloads of assistantgraduate psychologists and doctoral trainee clinical psychologists, withinthe framework of the team/specialty and Department policies and procedures.
4. To be involved, as appropriate, inthe short-listing and interviewing of assistant/graduate psychologists.
Researchand service evaluation
1. To utilise theory, evidence-basedliterature and research to support evidence-based practice in individual workand work with other team members.
2. To undertake, as a major component ofthe post, appropriate research and provide research advice to other staffundertaking research, and to disseminate appropriate material viapresentation and publication.
3. To lead on research projects withinthe area served by the team/service.

Person Specification Qualifications
- Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology
- Two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the British Psychological Society
- Further training in a specialised area of clinical practice through formal post-doctoral training (diploma or equivalent)
- Completion of (or completion by the time of starting the post), formal clinical supervisor training sufficient to be able to supervise doctoral trainees.
- Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
