Senior Clinical Fellow in Trauma & Orthopaedics

TheRotherham NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity fora Senior Clinical Fellow in the Trauma and Orthopaedic department. This post is ideal for a motivated andenthusiastic individual seeking to further develop specialist skills in handand wrist surgery while contributing to a high-quality clinical service.

Asa Senior Clinical Fellow, you will play an important role in the delivery ofboth elective and trauma services for patients with a wide range of conditions.Working closely with experienced Consultants and a multidisciplinary team, youwill gain valuable experience in the assessment, management, and operativetreatment of patients.

Thesuccessful candidate will have a strong foundation in Trauma and Orthopaedics,typically at ST3+ level or equivalent. Youshould be confident in managing acute trauma and elective conditions underappropriate supervision and demonstrate a commitment to developing advancedsurgical skills in this subspecialty.

Inaddition to clinical duties, the post holder will be encouraged to participatein teaching, audit, quality improvement, and service development activitieswithin the department.

Weare looking for someone who is clinically capable, proactive, and an effectivecommunicator, with a genuine enthusiasm for patient-centred care andprofessional development.

Main duties of the job

The primaryclinical responsibilities of the post holder are:

to assist in the provisions of a Consultant led traumaand orthopaedic service for in-patients, day cases and out-patients, withcontinuing responsibility for the patients and their care and for the properfunctioning of the department;

to carry out teaching duties as required and, in particular,to take an active part in the education programme of junior medical staff;

to provide an on-call emergency service, based on a 1:10rota,

participate fully in audit and the implementation ofClinical Governance and CNST,

deputise for absent colleagues and offer advice andguidance in addition to overseeing the day-to-day management of the department,

be available for such irregular commitments outsidenormally rostered duties, as are essential for continuity of patient care.

EnsureTrust Information Governance policy and best practice is followed (includingconfidentiality and data quality) to ensure data quality is maximised andconfidentiality of information is maintained and applied to all data recorded,utilised and reported on.

Job responsibilities

The Rotherham Trauma and Orthopaedicsdepartment is a very friendly forward-looking department with 16 consultants

We are supported by one Associate Specialist, Mr Rocha and a furtherOrthopaedic Consultant, Mr Saeed Ali.The other doctors/ANPs within the department include by four SASgrades, five STRs, two Wrightington Fellows, six ANPs (Advanced NursePractitioners), one FY2, two FY1s, and five Junior Clinical Fellows.

The department has two wards for theirpatients, Fitzwilliam for Trauma and Rockingham ward for electiveadmissions. We have 20 ring-fenced bedsin Rockingham ward for the elective patients.

The Rotherham Foundation Trust is partof a new surgical Orthopaedic centre of excellence - Mexborough ElectiveOrthopaedic Centre. This is acollaborative project with local hospitals within the ICS and is part of ourelective orthopaedic surgical capacity.

The department prides itself in providing the best teaching and trainingatmosphere for the Resident doctors. Twoof our consultants have won the regional Trainer of the Year award. Mr Kocheta is the Director of MedicalEducation for the Trust, Mr Wembridge is an FRCS examiner and Mr Paniker is anexaminer for the British Hand Diploma. MrHalsey is the chair of the AO Hand and Wrist trauma courses, Mr Garnetiinitiated the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Courses () and MrKocheta runs the upper limb trauma course (). There isweekly Thursday lunchtime teaching supported by consultants.

The soft tissue knee unitperform uni-compartment knee replacements as day surgery procedures. Thedepartment were double finalists for the HSJ 2019 awards for the work done toreduce mortality in patients with NOF fractures.

The department works closely with the MSK triage services to improve thereferral pathways for our patients. Wehave also recently successfully implemented the virtual fracture clinic in ourdepartment.

The Post

to carry out teaching dutiesas required and, in particular, to take an active part in the educationprogramme of junior medical staff;

to provide an on-call emergencyservice, based on a 1:10 rota,

participate fully in auditand the implementation of Clinical Governance and CNST,

deputise for absentcolleagues and offer advice and guidance in addition to overseeing theday-to-day management of the department,

be available for suchirregular commitments outside normally rostered duties, as are essential forcontinuity of patient care.

Ensure Trust InformationGovernance policy and best practice is followed (including confidentiality anddata quality) to ensure data quality is maximised and confidentiality ofinformation is maintained and applied to all data recorded, utilised andreported on.

The Consultant with whom you are teamed will have full continuingresponsibility for the care of patients, but the post holder will be expectedto support the management of these patients.This may require the provision of advice and assistance to / fromcolleagues in other specialties and the proper delegation of the treatmentof patients under his/her care to junior staff, which should include an element oftraining and education. The post holderwill be expected and encouraged by the Consultant to carry out any researchactivities which are an inherent part of normal clinical duties.
