Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Hepatology

The closing date is 01 February 2026

This is a replacement post. The remit of the postholder/s will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients within the service. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job

To provide middle grade cover to the Supra Regional Paediatric Liver Service.

To supervise Senior House Officers and to work with Specialist Registrars performing day to day care of the liver patients in Rays of Sunshine Ward, Day Case Unit and Outpatient clinics.

To maintain high quality communication both spoken and written with patients, parents, GP's and referring consultants

All aspects of documentation and care of paediatric hepatology inpatients.

Attendance on consultant led ward rounds.

OnCall middle grade resident rota 1 in 10

Assistance in conjunction with specialist registrars/consultants with the teaching of undergraduate medical students.

Involvement in the research interests of the department and audit will be encouraged.

Responsible for the day to day management of the junior doctors.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Training and Responsibilities:

Advanced management of complex hepatological and gastrointestinal disorders including fulminant hepatic failure (50 referrals per year) and short bowel syndrome

Diagnosis and management of acute and chronic liver diseases, metabolic liver diseases and liver tumours.

Assessment of patient for liver transplantation and small bowel transplantation

Pre, during and post liver and small bowel transplantation care

Management of post transplant immunosuppression

Counselling of parents of children with complex hepatic and gastrointestinal conditions

Follow up of children with complex liver disorders, and with chronic intestinal disorders

Nutritional assessment - assessment of nutritional status, dietary requirements, theory and techniques of enteral and parental nutrition support; role of nutrition support teams and special needs

Attain skills in co-operation with other specialists (surgery, radiology, pathology etc )

Research and audit in the aspects of the field of hepatology, immunology and gastroenterology Achieve skills in teaching undergraduates and awareness of aids to teaching

Person Specification Qualifications
  • GMC registration and MB BS or equivalent
  • MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent
Clinical Experience
  • Minimum 2 years paediatric experience in UK
  • Sub-speciality experience PALS or APLS
Clinical Skills:
  • Specified procedures as cited in the RCPCH Guidelines
  • Competent to work without direct supervision according to level of competence
  • Enthusiastic approach to learning practical procedures
Knowledge
  • Appropriate defined level of clinical knowledge, IT skills
  • Evidence of teaching experience
  • Breadth of experience , Understanding of clinical governance and evidence based medicine
  • Research experience, presentations
Organisational Skills:
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritise and organise self and juniors ,Evidence of participation in audit
  • Understanding of multi disciplinary nature of the paediatric hepatology service
