Job overview This post is for a Senior Oncoplastic Breast Surgery (Clinical) Fellow post, which will run to the 31st of August 2025.

This is a whole time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

The successful candidate will train within the Burney Breast Unit with the Breast Surgery team and will have the opportunity to also work with the Plastic Surgery team; Breast services are delivered over the 2 sites within the Mersey West Lancashire Trust (Whiston Hospital and St Helens Hospital).

Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at time of application.

Main duties of the job The post holder will support the elective activity of the unit by assisting in a variety of Diagnostic and Results/Follow up clinics and Breast theatre lists; independent practice is encouraged once the candidate is appropriately inducted into the unit.

Regular participation in Breast Screening & Main Oncology MDT is expected.

The candidate will be responsible for the management of the oncoplastic breast MDT. They will also be expected to participate in the DIEP planning MDT monthly.

Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Person specification Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification, MRCS
  • FRCS (gen or Plast) or international equivalent
  • Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC at the time of application
  • CCT- General Surgery or Plastic Surgery
  • Research qualification (e.g. MPhil, MD or PhD)
  • Teaching qualifications
  • Master's Degree
  • Additional Undergraduate Degree
Knowledge & Experience
  • Fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs
  • Applicant to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to enable effective communicate about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • 24 months of Specialist Breast or Plastic Surgery Training at ST5-8 level
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
  • Recognition of and ability to undertake initial management of acutely ill patient
  • Basic life support training within the last 12 months
  • Competency in: Breast new patient assessment / Simple mastectomy, palpable and image guided wide local excision, and sentinel lymph node biopsy as demonstrated by work based assessment evidence and logbook
