Senior Clinical Fellow in Medical Retina

Fixed Term - 1 year

Full Time - 40 hours per week (plus 1:10 on call commitment)

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for a fixed term position of a clinical fellow with a specialist interest in Medical Retina to join our renowned eye department. This post involves working to support the busy Medical Retina service including outpatients, injection & laser clinics.

The Medical Retina team consists of three consultants, two specialty doctors, numerous specialist trainee doctors, two nurse specialists, staff nurses, orthoptists, technicians and two ophthalmic imagers.

The ophthalmology department is well equipped with PDT, retinal, YAG. SLT lasers, 4 OCTs (Spectralis & Topcon), a digital fluorescein angiography system, a dedicated injection suite and eye theatres.

The new fellow will benefit from being exposed to a wide range of different Medical Retinal pathology including genetic disorders, CSCR and PDT treatment, hydroxychloroquine screening, sickle cell retinopathy, vein occlusions in addition to the more routine AMD and Diabetic Retinopathy.

This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends. This post also may include a 1:10 on call commitment.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of ophthalmic services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of patients in face to face medical retina clinics and virtual review of those from image-capture clinics.
  • Treatment of patients by the use of laser procedures.
  • Treatment of patients such as patients with AMD, DMO and Retinal vein occlusion by the use of intravitreal injection.
  • To cover eye emergency at least once per week.
  • To take part in the registrar on call rota.
  • Potential access to a theatre list (dependant on previous operating experience).

Person Specification
  • Full GMC Registration and hold a licence to practise
  • Comprehensive clinical experience in ophthalmology
  • Sufficient clinical experience in the treatment of patients in medical retina at clinical fellow level.
  • Experience in treating patients in eye casualty.
  • Experience in performing intravitreal injections.
  • Experience of performing laser procedures.
