A Senior Clinical Fellow post in Anaesthesia is available from February 2026 at the Oxford University Hospitals.
This is a 0.85 WTE post, offering the benefit of improved work/life balance, with a fixed day off midweek, while still offering development opportunities for candidates looking to pursue the portfolio pathway
We welcome applicants for the following post based across the hospitals of Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This two-year long post will allow the trainee exposure to various sub-specialties in Anaesthesia including but not limited to Vascular, Regional, Transplant, Major Cancer, Emergency, Trauma Anaesthesia, and Intensive Care Medicine.
This is a great opportunity to work with a friendly, supportive group of anaesthetists, which is part of the wider Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics, in the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will work within the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust group of hospitals:
- The John Radcliffe Hospital - Trauma, Neuro, Obstetrics, Vascular, Airway, Plastics, Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Intensive Care
- The Churchill Hospital - Transplant, Oncology, Airway, and Intensive Care
- The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre
- Horton General Hospital (Banbury) - Day Surgery including Paediatrics.
The specific aims and objectives will be set by the Fellow in conjunction with their supervisors. The Fellowship will allow development of advanced skills in various anaesthesia disciplines including both planning and delivering anaesthesia to the most complex cases occurring in this specialist centre. There will be opportunities to work with distant, local and direct supervision.
On starting the post Fellows work under the direct supervision of senior staff until they have successfully completed appropriate induction to their new site of work. The Fellow will average three half day sessions per week of training activities supervised by a Senior Trainer. Every three months during the post (or more frequently if required) training will be reviewed by the Supervisor.

Job responsibilitiesFellows are expected to keep accurate contemporaneous records of clinical activities or events, including pre-operative assessment, pre- and postoperative care, pain relief, critical incidents, etc., using the Trust approved documentation.
Fellows are expected to keep a record of their training including a log book of cases and a record of other activity.
The Departmental Administrator produces a weekly rota allocating each member of the trainee grades to particular duties. It is expected that the successful candidate will perform duties appropriate to the grade and to his/her level of experience. There will be times where the schedule has to be changed at short notice after the rota has been published and to move the Fellows to cover a different list, occasionally not directly related to the module they are currently undertaking.
ClinicalThe successful candidate may need to work across all OUH hospital sites, including the Horton hospital in Banbury.
The work schedule is resident, full shift 1:8 on call rota, mainly covering theatres but this may occasionally change to involve cover in Obstetrics and all Critical Care, especially in period so f high need, e.g. pandemic. Daytime work will typically include 3-monthly modules in specialties discussed between the Fellow, the programme director, and the College Tutors to ensure training of current trainees is not compromised.
Facilities for study and trainingTime is set aside for personal development, CPD and Audit. There are facilities both physical and electronic to support the post-holder in this. Additional time may be made available for research if desired.
Teaching, audit and researchFellows will be allocated time for completion of projects supporting their goals. There are numerous opportunities within the department for completion of projects including national audits, teaching medical students, and working in OxSTaR, the locally run simulation centre.
Person Specification Qualifications- Full registration with the GMC at the time of application
- FRCA or equivalent
- 5 years' experience in anaesthesia and intensive care, as part of a structured training programme
- ALS
- Able to provide high quality perioperative care independently for emergency and elective cases, or aware of limitations, at the level of ST6 trainee
- Teaching medical and nursing undergraduates and postgraduates
- NHS experience
- ATLS/APLS or equivalent
- Completed the equivalent of intermediate training in anaesthesia (UK CCT curriculum), particularly in regard to paediatrics and ICM.
- Critical Care Transfer experience
- Experience in day surgery and remote site anaesthesia
- Familiar with working in teams, with ability and experience in leading teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Self-motivated and sees tasks through to completion
- Conducts themselves in a professional manner at all times
- Prior involvement in Audit and Clinical governance
- Willing to follow national and local guidelines with respect to patient management and education
- Computer literacy in order to participate in electronic record keeping
- Able to perform common procedures required in Anaesthetic practice
