Job Description

University Hospitals, Crosshouse and Ayr are large district general hospitals based in Ayrshire, central Scotland. Crosshouse is situated 35 minutes south of Glasgow. The total catchment population is around 375,000. We wish to appoint a Senior Clinical Development Fellow within the department of medicine at University Hospital Crosshouse. Candidates ready for an immediate start are ideal but applicants who wish for a delayed start are welcome. The post will run until 4th August 2026.

Overview

Applications are invited from doctors for the position of Senior CDF in Medicine in NHS Ayrshire and Arran who have successfully completed Internal Medicine Training (IMT) programme or are currently working at the level of IMT 3. This post would also be suitable for candidates who have completed at least 2 years of the UK Internal Medicine Training Programme or its equivalent and are looking to apply for Higher Specialist Training. They must hold full MRCP (UK).

Responsibilities and opportunities

The aim of this post is to provide development opportunities for the post-holders, while supporting our key service areas in relation to the provision of clinical care by a trained doctor workforce. The post will provide experience in the management of acutely unwell medical patients and development of procedural skills. The posts, although not recognised for training, are structured to allow post-holders the opportunity to further develop their medical career.

This post is likely to appeal to applicants:

  • Wishing to complete alternative certificate of completion of competencies. This post will provide valuable knowledge and experience in the assessment and management of acutely unwell medical patients with the opportunity to be involved in medical HDU.
  • Seeking further experience in medical specialties before applying to Higher Specialty Training. Given the broad range of medical specialties available at University Hospital Crosshouse, there are extensive learning opportunities to facilitate this.

There will be regular opportunities to perform and develop procedural skills. Participation in our departmental quality improvement, audit and research work will also be encouraged, thus further strengthening your CV. The post will provide excellent experience for those wishing to apply to any of the medical specialties.

Within the constraints of service requirements, we will tailor the job to suit your requirements. It is likely that the post will be rotational through two specialties but can remain within one specialty if this aligns with the applicant's goals more closely.

During the tenure of the appointment post-holders will have a minimum of 4 hours per week development time and access to a £1250 study budget (pro rata), to support them with the attainment of their career aims.

A 40% pay banding supplement will be paid to recognise contribution to out of hours working and the core salary will be based on a salary range of £45,504 - £71,550. The posts are not recognised for national training. Applicants must hold Full GMC Registration with a current Licence to Practice by the time of appointment and have a minimum of 12 months paid NHS Experience. They must hold MRCP and be able to act at Registrar level including working with remote supervision out of hours.
