As a Senior Civil and Highways Engineer based in London, UK, you will take a leading role in the design and delivery of a wide range of building, highways and public realm projects across the UK and a range of sectors including residential, education and commercial.

You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams across Civic, work with high-profile public and private clients, and support the shaping of healthier, climate-resilient and people-centred urban environments.

Key elements of the job Technical
  • Lead and undertake engineering design and analysis of highways, streets, drainage and overall civil infrastructure.
  • Develop concept, preliminary and detailed designs aligned with local, regional and national guidance.
  • Identify problems and opportunities, assessing and resolving problems using qualitative and quantitative measures, and supervising others to do so.
  • Preparation, presentation and self-checking of technical reports, drawings and design packages, and supervising others to do so.
  • Undertake and oversee technical checking and self-checking of work.
  • Use and supervise the use of industry-standard software (e.g., CAD, GIS, junction modelling, drainage and levels design tools).
  • Lead internal technical reviews and ensure design compliance with CDM 2015 duties and the Civic IMS/QMS.
Managerial
  • Take responsibility and ownership of the project: understanding outputs required, deadlines, consultation requirements, liaising with the project team, managing client expectations, and feeding any matters arising back to the management team.
  • Manage and mentor engineers, graduates and technicians within the team, supporting skills development and high-quality outputs.
  • Manage resource plans and programming alongside team leaders.
  • Attend meetings as the lead Civic representative and maintain regular client communication
  • Contribute to business development, including writing fee proposals, supporting bids and attending networking opportunities.
  • Project financial and commercial awareness.
  • Maintain strong commercial awareness, including monitoring budgets, scope and programme.

Key Skills / Competencies
  • In-depth understanding of industry processes, including planning applications, procurement, and technical approvals.
  • Proficiency in industry software like Microdrainage, Causeway Flow, Civil 3D, and AutoCAD, including KeyLines, KeySigns and Vehicle Tracking.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, graphical).
  • Exceptional report-writing skills.
  • Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • High proficiency in MS Office products (Excel, Word).
  • Excellent time management of self and others, and commercial awareness.
  • Strong teamwork capabilities and interpersonal skills.
  • Developing industry network and business development skills
Is this you?
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or an analytical subject with sufficient industry experience.
  • A post-graduate qualification in engineering, transportation, planning or a related subject would be beneficial.
  • Either Chartered or Incorporated status with the relevant professional body, or be close to (typically within 6 months of) chartership submission (e.g. MICE, MICHT)
  • Extensive relevant design office experience within a commercial environment
  • A good range of experience in Civil and Highways Engineering work, such as drainage design, flood risk assessments, active travel and highways network design, network management, S278, data collection, modelling, business case development or similar.
