Are you an experienced education professional who understands the importance of patience, routine, communication, and emotional regulation when supporting autistic pupils?
A school in Welwyn Garden City is seeking a compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to provide specialist support to young people with ASC alongside SEMH and behavioural needs.
You will play an important role in helping pupils overcome barriers to learning and develop the skills they need to become more confident and independent.
What You Will Be Doing as a SEMH Teaching Assistant in Welwyn Garden CityThe successful SEMH Teaching Assistant will provide individualised support tailored to each pupil.
This may include:- Supporting pupils with ASC, ADHD, SEMH needs, and associated learning difficulties
- Helping pupils understand and communicate their emotions
- Using appropriate strategies to support emotional and sensory regulation
- Providing reassurance during periods of anxiety or distress
- Maintaining clear routines and expectations
- Helping pupils transition successfully between activities
- Encouraging engagement with classroom learning
- Supporting positive behaviour strategies
- Building strong and trusting relationships with pupils
- Working alongside teachers, SENCOs, parents, carers, and external professionals

- Previous experience working with autistic children or young people
- Experience within a school, specialist education, SEMH, or similar environment
- An understanding of ASC and individual differences in communication and sensory processing
- Experience supporting challenging behaviour in a positive and appropriate way
- A patient and resilient approach
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- A genuine commitment to improving outcomes for young people with additional needs
- Located in Welwyn Garden City
- Full time permanent contract
