THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF KAKOLI'S PASSION AND DRIVE
Children's Services in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where inspirational people like Kakoli are dedicated to encouraging everyone they work with to be the very best they can be.
Ever since she was a child, Kakoli has believed that children are the ones who'll change the world for the better. Who'll create the future we all wish for. And she always knew her calling was to get on the front line and help those who might not be as fortunate as herself.
Driven and passionate about making a difference, she first joined Westminster as a Social Work Assistant, and her managers immediately saw she had huge potential, so they encouraged her to apply to study for a degree in social work. She passed with flying colours, and over the next fourteen years worked as a frontline Social Worker, a Senior Social Worker, a Deputy Service Manager and is now one of our Service Managers.
Kakoli's vision is as clear now as it was all those years ago - to encourage and support children, and help them grow in safe, vibrant communities. Her achievements are many, but she's most proud of the fact that these days Westminster doesn't 'do things for families' but 'does things with families'. And she believes this huge but subtle difference to the way we work has allowed thousands of children in Westminster to fulfil their potential and live their dreams.
As School Admissions Officer, you can make your own powerful contribution to the lives of children, young people and families. Joining a small, close-knit team of people working on access to education across Westminster and our neighbouring borough of Kensington & Chelsea, you'll focus on admissions and transfers at both primary and secondary level. Playing a key role in recording, monitoring and tracking the data on starters and leavers supplied by schools, you'll also provide assistance and support which will include dealing with enquiries from members of the public, schools and other agencies.
Representing the two boroughs when completing applications with parents and carers who are applying for a school place, and attending schools and other venues to provide advice on the application process, you'll assist with the development and maintenance of relevant computer databases. We'll also expect you to work closely with the Special Educational Needs Team in administering the arrangements for the primary to secondary school transfer of pupils with Child Health & Care Plans, and for those starting school for the first time.
You'll have a wide range of additional responsibilities - these include working with the Children Missing Education Officer to ensure children not receiving education are identified quickly, promoting the safeguarding of children, and supporting the preparation of paperwork for independent appeal panel cases. Dedicated to keeping up to speed with the School Admissions Code, you'll monitor and advise schools on good practice relating to admissions matters, and undertake general administrative duties when required. These could include distributing information to schools, taking minutes and distributing the agendas of meetings, preparing correspondence from MPs and elected members, and developing positive relationships with colleagues, parents, schools, governors, headteachers, councillors, other local authorities, the DfE and other related bodies.
Please refer to the Job Description for more information.
To be a success in this stimulating and busy role you should have plenty of experience working in either a Local Authority or a customer/client focused service, well-developed IT skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, and the ability to use databases and adapt to new technology. While admissions experience is desirable but not essential, you should have some knowledge of the functions of a Local Authority and a full understanding and appreciation of the challenges and changes facing an education service.
It's important that you're capable of interpreting relevant legislation and guidance and applying it to your work, and in addition to good numeracy skills, you should also possess the ability to handle invoice processing and draft grammatically correct correspondence. Your superb communication skills will allow you to interact effectively with people at all levels, and to maintain a positive attitude in challenging situations and when dealing with difficult service users. Committed to respecting strict confidentiality requirements and standards, especially with issues concerning the Freedom of Information and the Data Protection Acts, you should also have good knowledge of our policies on equal opportunities, and the skills to apply them in the work place.
Ours is a fact-paced, collaborative and flexible team environment, so you'll be ready to organise and prioritise a varying workload to meet tight deadlines, often while working under pressure and with shifting priorities. With plenty of initiative and a proactive attitude towards providing a customer focused service of the highest quality, we'll also expect you to be empathetic, a natural problem solver and an innovative, analytical thinker.
