River Improvements Engineer

About The Role
Are you a chartered civil or hydraulic engineer with a passion for river environments? Do you have a proven track record designing fish and eel passes or similar in-river schemes? Are you looking to lead meaningful projects that improve aquatic habitats across the UK?
We're looking for a River Improvements Engineer to join APEM's growing environmentally focused civil engineering design team. This role is ideal for someone with strong technical expertise in river engineering, particularly fish and eel pass design. Are you ready to take the lead on exciting, impactful projects?
In this role, you'll work on a wide range of schemes including fish passes, river restoration, eel passes, fish screens and natural flood management. You'll lead projects from feasibility to detailed design, working closely with internal specialists and a diverse client base that includes water companies, environmental agencies, and river trusts.
This is a key hire for our team, and the most critical requirement is hands-on experience designing fish and eel passes or similar in-river engineering projects . You'll bring a sound understanding of river systems and the challenges involved in delivering technically complex, environmentally sensitive solutions.
To be successful in this role, you'll need:
A BEng or MEng in a relevant discipline
Proven experience designing in-river engineering solutions, including fish and/or eel passes
A solid grasp of CDM regulations and risk management in design
The ability to manage projects and clients confidently and professionally
Strong report writing and communication skills
Chartered status with ICE or CIWEM (or working towards it)
Commercial awareness and experience working in a consultancy environment
Bonus points for:
Experience with 1D/2D hydraulic modelling
Experience designing river restoration or flood risk management schemes
A full driving licence
