Ranger

An opportunity has arisen for a Ranger to join the Surrey Hills Countryside team at Bookham Commons.

You'll play a key role in the conservation and restoration of one of the best recorded clay sites in Britain - Bookham Commons SSSI. As part of our dedicated ranger and volunteer team, you'll help to protect, restore and monitor a wide variety of priority habitats, contributing to the long term resilience of this precious place.

Contract: Fixed term contract for 18 months.

Hours / working pattern: Part time, 30 hours (4 7.5 hr days) per week. You should be willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings.

Interview: week commencing 10 th August 2026.

Due to the size of the property, a full UK driving licence (or equivalent) is essential.

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the Area Ranger, this role offers the opportunity to help deliver ambitious habitat restoration at Bookham Commons, a nationally important SSSI and one of Britain's best recorded clay sites. The Commons are a unique mosaic of ancient oak woodland, ancient wood pasture, lowland meadow, scrub, ponds and chalk streams, supporting exceptional wildlife. More than 80 years of ecological recording by the London Natural History Society has documented over 3,000 species. Our small, supportive ranger team is passionate about nature conservation, practical land management and creating great visitor experiences. Focusing on habitat management and monitoring while working closely with our dedicated volunteers, you'll see the impact of your work firsthand while developing valuable skills in a historic landscape with a strong vision for nature recovery.

What you'll be doing

You'll help care for Bookham Commons' habitats, wildlife and estate infrastructure, playing a key role in delivering practical conservation across the site. You'll share your knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors, volunteers and colleagues, helping others connect with and value this special landscape.

Working closely with staff and volunteers, you'll deliver habitat restoration and management across our network of woodland rides, species rich grasslands, scrub habitats and coppice woodland. Whether undertaking practical countryside tasks, monitoring habitat condition, operating machinery or supporting volunteer work parties, you'll approach challenges with a positive, solutions focused mindset.

This is a hands on, physically demanding role that offers the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the recovery and long term stewardship of a heritage landscape.

Who we're looking for

• Practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
• Happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you're doing, and why it matters
• Hard working and willing to learn
• Able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
• Experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
• Able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
• A driver with a full UK driving licence
