Radiology PACS Support/Receptionist Band 2

Full Time Position

A vacancy has arisen for a full time PACS Support/Receptionist team member in the Radiology Department.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide a patient focussed service working on various Reception desks within Radiology at both Whiston and St. Helens sites, facilitate the transmission of images to other hospitals when required, and perform a wide variety of PACS duties to assist with patient care.

Applicants should be hard working, flexible, motivated and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Initiative and computer literacy are also essential for this role.

As the Radiology Department operates a 7 day service, the post will include weekend, evening and Bank Holiday duties on a rota basis.

The JD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change.

Main duties of the job
  • The successful candidates will be expected to provide a patient focussed service in various Reception areas within Radiology at both Whiston and St. Helens sites and facilitate the transmission of images to other hospitals when required to assist with patient care.

Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities KEY DUTIES
  • Undertake general reception duties including greeting patients, verification of patient details and updating patient demographics on Trust Information Systems.
  • Enter patient and examination details on Patient Administration System (PAS) and Radiology Information System (RIS) following departmental procedures.
  • Ensure accurate data quality is maintained during data entry.
  • Make appointments as required.
  • Liaise with portering staff to facilitate the transfer of patients to and from the wards and departments.
  • Maintain and update with regular training knowledge of RIS and PAS.
  • Filing and good housekeeping of paper and electronic documentation.
  • Respond to enquiries in a positive and helpful manner and deal both by telephone and face to face.
  • Communicate with patients and their relatives in a patient, courteous and sympathetic manner.
  • Arrange ambulance or transport for patients if required.
  • Give general advice to patients or redirect to an appropriate department.
  • Deal with complaints on a first line basis or refer to the relevant department/member of staff. (N.b. May occasionally experience stressful or distressing situations.)
  • Liaise with PACS teams from other Trusts to assist in image transfer
  • Provide radiology images for multi disciplinary team meetings in relevant folders on Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS)
  • Facilitate image transfer to other Trusts either by CD/Dicom push or any other method of image transport
  • Prioritise image workload depending on clinical urgency.
  • Undertake data entry on the Radiology Information System (RIS) and Patient Administration System (PAS) for imported images.
  • Access national tracing systems to check patient demographics
  • Respond to enquiries relating to image transfer and general PACS issues.
  • Maintain and update with regular training a range of knowledge of the RIS and PACS.
  • Provide support to PACS/RIS team.
  • Liaise with clinical staff to ensure the smooth running of the department.
  • To work in a flexible manner in accordance with the Trust Policy.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Merge duplicate records on RIS, Image viewing system and PAS.
  • Identify duplicates/errors on the system and deal with them appropriately
  • Produce encrypted CDs for image transfer and for legal cases
TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure attendance at Trust Mandatory Training sessions
  • Maintain knowledge and skills of department/Trust systems, policies and procedures
  • To observe the provisions of and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.
Person specification Qualifications
  • Educated to NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualification and/or equivalent experience
  • ECDL or equivalent qualification and/or experience
  • Customer Care NVQ qualification
Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience of working in a clerical environment
  • Competent IT user
  • Able to deal with the public in person and via the telephone
  • Previous NHS experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
