Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Radiologist (Clinical AI Lead) to support the strategic development and delivery of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, education, training, service evaluation, and research at the National Imaging Academy Wales (NIAW). The role will focus on driving innovation, supporting translational research, and enabling the safe and effective adoption of AI within radiology services across Wales.
This is a one-year fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of extension for a further year.
The Academy offers outstanding facilities, including a 100-seat lecture theatre, three workstation-based teaching suites, simulation facilities, dedicated AI and digital infrastructure, and state-of-the art audio visual systems to support high quality education, research, and collaborative development.
We are seeking a Consultant Radiologist with demonstrable expertise and a strong interest in AI development, machine learning, and digital innovation in radiology. The postholder will contribute to high quality service evaluations, research programmes, AI education, and training delivered from the Academy site, while complementing and enhancing NIAW led AI initiatives across Welsh hospital sites.
Consultants with experience in AI development and implementation, digital health leadership, research, and postgraduate education are particularly encouraged to apply and join this exciting phase of NIAW's development.
Main duties of the jobDUTIES OF THE POST
Alongside the Senior Management team, the Consultant Radiologist (Clinical AI Lead) will be expected to:
- Provide strategic leadership for AI related research and service evaluation activity within NIAW and across NHS Wales, supporting the development, evaluation, and translation of AI technologies into clinical radiology practice.
- Lead and contribute to research programmes involving artificial intelligence, machine learning, and large language models, including clinical validation, real world evaluation, and impact assessment of AI tools.
- Foster collaborations with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), industry partners, and the third sector to support high quality, ethically approved AI research and innovation.
- Support the development of grant applications, research funding bids, and business cases related to AI and digital health innovation.
- Ensure AI research activity aligns with NHS Wales priorities, regulatory requirements, and robust data governance, information security, and ethical standards.
- Promote dissemination of research outputs through peer reviewed publications, presentations, and knowledge sharing activities, supporting a culture of innovation and evidence based adoption of AI.

Job responsibilitiesIn collaboration with the Academy Director, Clinical Research Lead, and the wider team the successful candidate will:
- Deliver AI and digital health training at the Academy, including education on safe, effective clinical use of AI tools.
- Contribute to the strategic and educational leadership of AI and digital training programmes at the Academy.
- Provide academic and professional supervision for trainees undertaking AI related education, research, or quality improvement projects.
- Contribute to undergraduate medical education in areas relating to AI, data literacy, and digital diagnostics.
- Contribute to the education and training of non radiology clinicians and allied health professionals in the use, governance, and limitations of AI in clinical practice.
- Participate in and support AI research, innovation, and evaluation activity facilitated through the Academy.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of AI focused courses, workshops, and conferences hosted by the Academy.
- Contribute to strategic developments for NHS Wales Diagnostic Services, including AI enabled service redesign, workforce planning, and the development of digital and data capability across the diagnostic workforce.
- Able to undertake duties at consultant level, including management and leadership responsibilities. This includes organisation of teaching, training & audit.
- Background in Research & AI projects, LLM.
- Experience in teaching.
- Ability to deliver AI training.
- Experience in the development of LLM.
- Education/Qualifications & Training MB BCh or equivalent. Post Graduate Diploma, e.g. FRCR, MRCP.
- At time of interview, the candidate must be:
- On the Specialist Register, or
- Have a primary medical qualification and recognised specialist qualification from an EEA country or Switzerland which will allow direct entry onto the Specialist Register.
