Project Accountant - Unit Costing & Performance Analysis (6 Month Contract)
About the Role
This is a 6-month fixed-term contract with a well-established not-for-profit organisation supporting older people.
The purpose of this role is to provide a clear understanding of the cost, efficiency and performance of frontline service delivery teams. Working across Finance, Operations and Monitoring & Evaluation teams, you will develop practical unit costing models, analyse service performance, and produce meaningful reporting that demonstrates:
- Value for money
- Cost per service user and activity
- Performance against key targets
- Impact of services delivered
A key outcome of the assignment will be to provide funders, leadership and stakeholders with a strong evidence base that clearly links funding, service activity, outcomes and impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop unit costing models across service delivery programmes.
- Analyse service costs, activity levels and performance data.
- Calculate cost per service, cost per beneficiary and cost per outcome.
- Produce management reports and performance dashboards.
- Monitor budget performance and identify key cost drivers.
- Support value-for-money and impact reporting for funders.
- Present financial and operational insights to senior management.
- Work closely with service delivery and monitoring & evaluation teams to link financial information with service outcomes.
- Provide recommendations to improve efficiency, sustainability and resource allocation.
Ideal Candidate
- Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA or equivalent).
- Strong management accounting or project accounting experience.
- Experience developing costing models and analysing performance data.
- Advanced Excel skills with strong financial modelling capability.
- Ability to turn complex data into clear, meaningful insights.
- Experience producing reports for senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Power BI experience would be advantageous.
- Previous experience within not-for-profit, healthcare, social care or grant-funded environments would be beneficial.
Success in the Role
At the end of the contract, the successful candidate will have:
- Developed robust unit costing methodologies across key services.
- Quantified the performance and efficiency of service delivery teams.
- Improved understanding of service cost drivers and resource utilisation.
- Produced clear evidence of value for money and organisational impact.
- Created reporting that demonstrates accountability to funders and supports future funding applications.
This role would suit a commercially minded accountant who enjoys combining financial analysis with operational performance data to support better decision-making and demonstrate measurable social impact.
Availability
- This is a 6-month fixed-term contract.
- Preference will be given to candidates who are immediately available or available within a short notice period.
- The organisation is keen to appoint someone who can quickly establish unit costing methodologies, analyse service performance, and deliver meaningful value-for-money reporting within the contract timeframe.
