Principal Mechanical Responsible Engineer
Location: Manchester/Risley with regular travel to Cumbria
Security: BPSS required (must be eligible for SC clearance)
We are working with a leading engineering and construction company that specialises in delivering complex infrastructure projects across sectors including energy, water, transportation, defence, and nuclear. The organisation provides integrated services spanning consulting, engineering design, project management, and construction delivery, working closely with government bodies, regulated utilities, and major private sector clients. The organisation is seeking a Mechanical Responsible Engineer to support the delivery of a major long-term utilities infrastructure programme at a nuclear-licensed site in Cumbria. The role will involve leading mechanical design activities across a range of site utility systems from concept through to commissioning.
Key ResponsibilitiesProvide technical leadership and act as the Mechanical Responsible Engineer across the programme.
Manage internal and external mechanical design teams and consultants.
Ensure designs are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with regulatory standards.
Review and technically assure mechanical design deliverables and supplier designs.
Implement and manage the Design Management Plan and engineering processes.
Monitor design progress, risks, and technical performance.
Manage and control mechanical design change.
Work closely with project, procurement, and construction teams to ensure constructable design solutions.
Embed sustainability and carbon reduction principles into design solutions.
Utilities ScopeProjects include upgrades and refurbishment across:
Steam systems (LP & HP)
Water systems (wastewater, raw, domestic & demineralised)
Compressed air systems
Chemical storage and distribution
Sewage treatment facilities
Utility distribution networks and tanker off-load facilities
Skills & ExperienceStrong background in mechanical engineering leadership within large infrastructure programmes.
Ability to review and manage complex mechanical design deliverables.
Good knowledge of UK engineering legislation and standards.
Experience in regulated sectors (nuclear, energy, water, industrial) beneficial.
QualificationsDegree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
Chartered Engineer (IMechE, CIBSE or similar).
CSCS Safety Passport.
BPSS clearance or ability to obtain SC clearance.
