Job Description

Principal Engineer (DB & Digital Business Automation) - 6 months+ - Hybrid/Sheffield - Umbrella £550/£570

We're looking for an experienced Principal Engineer to play a pivotal role in our client's Global Database Platform function. This is a high-impact, senior engineering role where you'll shape strategy, influence decision-making, and set the technical bar across a highly regulated enterprise environment.

The role:

  • Act as a technical authority for database engineering across the Global Database Platform
  • Lead and advise on Digital Business Automation, with a strong focus on:
    • Managed File Transfer (MFT)
    • Enterprise scheduling (Control-M essential)
  • Drive DevOps best practices - not just implementing, but challenging and improving how things are done
  • Influence architecture and engineering decisions using data-driven insight
  • Design and assure platforms with availability, resilience, security, and safety front of mind
  • Mentor and develop engineers, raising capability and technical maturity across teams
  • Partner with product, security, operations, and governance teams to deliver compliant, future-ready services

To apply you should bring the following skills and experience:

  • 5+ years proven Principal-level engineering experience, with databases as your core strength
  • Deep SME knowledge of Digital Business Automation, including:
    • Control-M scheduling (hands-on and strategic)
    • MFT platforms in enterprise environments
  • Strong engineering mindset - automation, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability
  • The gravitas to lead, influence, and challenge at senior stakeholder level
  • Experience operating in highly regulated environments (financial services, government, healthcare, etc.)
  • Ability to balance strategic vision with hands-on technical leadership
