The OpportunityWe have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Principal Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. With a shared office space in our Stafford office and the ability to work remotely, we invite applications from across the region.
Amey Consulting provides design and support services to Staffordshire County Council (SCC) and developers across the County through our Infrastructure+ contract. The team manages a large portfolio, from detailed design of projects over £1m to technical checking and site supervision for SCC. This role offers a chance to follow projects from inception to construction, developing your career in highway design and construction within a fast-paced, collaborative, and supportive team. It requires strong experience in designing highways and infrastructure projects.

The roleAs a Highways Principal Engineer, you'll manage project delivery on the Highways account, overseeing small, medium, and some larger projects, including bypasses, trunk road improvements, and major infrastructure site preparations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as a technical team leader, providing advice, guidance, and supervision
- Leading design preparation and checks according to DMRB or other standards
- Managing project budgets and costs
- Liaising with clients and suppliers, presenting proposals, and attending meetings
- Contributing to bid preparations and work-winning activities
- Driving health and safety practices within the team
- Extensive experience in highway design and delivery, likely from a Senior Engineer role or similar
- Ability to produce and lead technically sound engineering solutions
- Experience managing health, safety, and welfare aspects
- Capability to lead larger projects as the engineering lead
- Knowledge of design and specification processes, able to manage others
- Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools
- Understanding of CDM and risk assessments, capable of acting as Principal Designer
- People management skills, capable of influencing technical teams
- Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent professional license
